Is Muay Thai compatible with distance running?

    Hi guys. I was hoping some of the martial arts fundis could help me.

    I do distance running on the road as I have done for quite some time. Recently, I tried Muay Thai and enjoyed it, particularly the short, intense fitness involved, the likes of which I hadn't done since high school track training. Punching and kicking the bags/people is also pretty fun.

    I think introducing intense fitness to my endurance training would be helpful but I'm worried that Muay Thai not be ideal. Do you know if Muay Thai training could reduce my running endurance? Would striking significantly increase the risk of injuries that could prevent me from running?

    Injuries you may sustain from muay thai may, and probably will, prevent you from distance running at times due to the fact that kicking and kneeing is a big part of the sport. Not to mention, fighters are often susceptible to knee injuries.

    Although cardiovascular endurance plays a big part in both sports, you may be lacking strength and endurance in other areas which would be beneficial in muay thai training.

    It really depends on how far you wish to go with the Muay Thai training. As LVmoto said, it is a sport where you will be at a risk of suffering injuries that may harm your running, but if you take it easy and don't train with a competition mind set then you should be fine. The risk will still be there but will be much lower.

    But then again, sparring is an important part of that art, so even if you reduce the risk of injuries by not sparring as often, the practice will just become boring IMO.

    Have you considered boxing? It is such a great cardio activity, you still get to punch bags and the risk of injuries to the legs and knee is almost nonexistent.

    I just had no idea if leg injuries were prevalent. It seems that could definitely be a factor. Being a beginner, I think I would be able to cope without much sparring for quite a while (plenty of technique, etc. to keep me interested for a while).

    I'll have a look if there is any boxing on offer near me.

    I recommend joining a kickboxing club. For low monthly fixed $ (like $60), you can have the benefits of a personal trainer, train you with strikes and kicks on the bag, and they'll combine it with core training. Its awesome getting a kickboxing w core training workout without walking away with injuries.I train in everything, kickboxing, thai, judo, mostly jiu jitsu. Doing a kickbag is my fav workout with the greatest mental benefits. Totally mellows me out the next day-it works your spine a certain way that freshens one up mentally. It stimulates sensors in your mind that decreases depression naturally

    Weird a topic like this would come up while I'm studying Muay Thai for a quiz. Here is what my notes say:
    " When designed well, a kickboxing class can burn as many calories as a 60 minute steady run on the treadmill."

    So for your question I'd say no. It could be too much for you to handle both running and Muay Thai.

    Another positive to consider,....if you workout only on the kickbag ( with no sparring), it will help build your cardio with no negative impact on your joints that comes from running. A few pro sport teams are implementing the kickbag workouts to help minimize joint damage that comes with running, and they are still getting the cardio in.

    Do both? :0) Just know your limits.

    Distance running tends to burn muscle,
    which is not conducive to generating power in
    Muay Thai attacks.

    To get the most of either, I'd say you should
    choose one and go with it.

    how far is distance running?
    thai training camps usually start with a 10km run to their workout..
    you will be fine, i'd say they are more complementary - just compare body types of distance runners and thai fighters and you will find they are more similar than different
