Praying mantis eating a live cicada! Took this picture today at Conway Robinson Forest in Gainesville, VA. Gross, but adult cicadas don't live too long anyway.

There's a praying mantis that hangs around my apartment building all the time. Most days when I go out to run, there it is chilling out on a wall or on the handrail of the stairs.

This needs to happen more often. I'll continue to love spiders for that.

That mantis must be deaf because those cicadas can blow out an eardrum. This cicada must not have been aware of his own superpowers.

You know what, I think the mantis may be eating a beetle that's eating the cicada. Take a close look at the top picture, and then this back side.

Rude mantis interrupting someone's dinner. This is why you should always call first.

I have been considering buying a bunch of these to eat the ants but I'm concerned that they will also get the hummingbirds. I don't want to off-set nature's natural balance but I think we have way too many ants in my area.

I kind of wish that we had anteaters in my area...but I'm not sure how well they would do with the other animals in my area: rattlesnakes, scorpions, bears, bobcats, deer, coyotes, possums, raccoons, squirrels, hawks, eagles, etc.

Seriously, there must be millions of ants in my area. I see them walking up and down the entire street.

We have lots of spiders but they don't seem to eat enough of the ants.

Where can I get a couple male/female wild anteaters that I can let loose in the forest that surrounds me. ;)
