Gaydar...Does it really exist?

Hey Guys! Hey, what do you all think about "Gaydar"? I like the concept but never have seemed to figure it out. There are some guys out there who can see another guy and know if he is gay or not immediately. I usually have no clue and can't figure it out. There are definitely guys who I am extremely attracted to but since I can never get a grasp as to whether they are gay or not, I tend to not want to make a fool of myself and approach them and hold back until I am approached. Can any of you guys shed some light on this for me and help me get my gaydar online? icon_biggrin.gif What do you look for? What are the tell tale signs? I feel like I am the only gay guy without this talent! Thanks everyone!

It seems that everybody else on RJ has vastly impaired Gaydars too. Heh. So you are not alone.

Gaydar exists, a couple of my good friends have very high accuracy.

My gayar set somehow seems to be British WWII surplus and not very reliable.

Eye contact is the key....and assume they are gay until proved otherwise. Can't hit a home run unless you swing the bat.

I guess it does exist .. but not the way u think it is ..

it's not a magical machine .. it's about ur skills and experience in life in addition to the natural feelings, that you get when u see someone who feel and think like you in some way ..

Maybe your Gaydar is working fine and their comfort level with being into men is low.

My Gaydar isn't in top form. Either it is accurate and the guys I suspect are gay just haven't come out to themselves, or I need to calibrate my system. I do know that "gay" clues seem to be regional.

I was told by a guy visiting from Atlanta that his Gaydar didn't work in Oregon at all. He figured I was the kind of guy who would want to break his face.

My biggest Gaydar success story? The former Marine with the TEUFELSHUND tat on his back I ran into at the gym. He was in town for work from the east coast. I got a vibe, figured out he was peeking in the locker room, and I gave him my email. Details only by request.

Actually, it's entirely possible now. Everyone just needs to carry a GPS-enabled phone with a little app that identifies Dorothy's friends and their locations. Of course, twisted redneck fucks could use it to find victims, so w'e better hack into their phones and mark them too.

    Hey... it's PacMan!

Does anyone remember about a year ago apparently they did a study of the gait (how we walk) between straight and gay guys? Apparently gay guys did have a slightly different gait. I suppose if you're sensitive enough to pick up on that, then that's like gaydar.

But I swear, I watched that video at least 20 times trying to see any discernible difference, and nope, couldn't really tell how they were substantially different.

I think it's less about being able to pick out gay guys, and more about being perceptive. I have a friend who has spot on gaydar. She can walk into a room and withing 15 minutes point out all the gay guys.

But she can also read people really well. She knows exactly who's digging who at every party. She knows when someone's sad or anxious or happy just by glancing at them. She's just and intuitive person. It can sometimes border on telepathic the things she'll pick up on, even with people she's meeting for the first time.

So I don't think it's gaydar, I think it's just that some people are more perceptive. Gay guys come in all different packages, so trying to do it by looks or actions alone isn't going to work.

I agree with Luckydog that a lot of gaydar is really eye contact. A gay man will very often hold eye contact with another man just a bit longer than a straight man.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that interaction with gay men and the gay scene plays a huge role in developing "Gaydar". I know for a fact that when I first came out it was always a guessing game... is HE gay? No, maybe THAT ONE is! and so forth. Going out and socializing helped tons. You start observing and picking up on characteristics that you would have otherwise not even noticed. Having gay friends helps too! Up to this day, when I'm with my friends we sometimes people watch (I know... very much High School) and play the 'Is he gay game'. If we all agree that we picked up a gay vibe, it's a good chance he is! Granted my gaydar is not always 100% on target, but it's pretty damn close. As Johnnie Ray stated, Eye contact.... HUGE giveaway! Breeders don't glance at you or much less stare at you unless they know you. Smile, you just might get a wink back icon_wink.gif. Or he'll stare away and that will be the end of that! All in all, give it time to develop, don't fret over it! I reiterate, interaction... interaction... INTERACTION! icon_lol.gif

Donny, you have it nailed. The eyes have it. To expand on what you said, I notice a guy's eyes actually 'brighten' when he checks me out - and so I let mine do the same - just to send back the message, "Yep, your Gaydar is working - I'm family too!" Then, we're free to actually talk to each other - and maybe exchange numbers. It's all good!

Got pretty good gaydar. It even once alerted on a guy based solely on a non-related newspaper article about him I happened to read. Contacted him by mail, met in person, gaydar again alerted, were together 2 years. Gaydar works.
