And why does everybody hate them?

I keep seeing headlines about replacement referees...and they don't sound happy.

There's some type of labor/union/contract dispute between the regular refs and the NFL. Rather than hold up the football season, the NFL brought in replacement refs (scabs) while they work things out with the regular refs. Apparently, these replacements reps aren't very experienced. Hence, all the bad calls and mistakes.

They go for about a dime a dozen in the states... other than that, they're useless.

Actually, a lot of the replacement refs are from the high school or NAIA ranks. The ones at the DI level didn't risk taking the job since there was no job security. Replacement refs are only making about 2,500 per game.

The refs who are striking, work 20 games year and make about 120K. Now, they want 150K and full-time benefits but only 20 days a year.

On what base do they want to upgrade from 120K to 150K. The other referees in other sports make more or are they are just greedy?

I think I saw a story about the owners dropping retirement for refs only because no one gets that anymore according to the owners

This really shows me how the worker benefits that were achieved last century are being rolled back.
