from today's NYTimes, by Mark Lilla:

"Once upon a time there was a radical president who tried to remake American society through government action. In his first term he created a vast network of federal grants to state and local governments for social programs that cost billions. He set up an imposing agency to regulate air and water emissions, and another to regulate workers’ health and safety.

Had Congress not stood in his way he would have gone much further. He tried to establish a guaranteed minimum income for all working families and, to top it off, proposed a national health plan that would have provided government insurance for low-income families, required employers to cover all their workers and set standards for private insurance.

Thankfully for the country, his second term was cut short and his collectivist dreams were never realized.

    His name was Richard Nixon."

That's the main problem with Mitt Romney.
He has a very small penis.

JockTheVote: ...His name was Richard Nixon.
jockfever: Democrats, including Hillary, worked long hours toward impeaching him. For what? Few can remember, but righteous Senate Republicans said they wouldn't stand by him.

Then came poetic justice: Hillary's womanizing, finger-wagging "I did not have sexual relations with that woman," alleged Juanita Broaddrick rapist, sexual harassing, adulterous Slick Willy then faced impeachment for perjury, suborning perjury, and obstruction of justice. He perjured himself before a grand jury in the Paula Jones affair and was disbarred from the Supreme Courts of the United States and Arkansas. Democrats circled the wagons and acclaim him as a statesman and a keynote speaker.

G.W. Bush should have been impeached for even more serious lies like the faulty intelligence about Iraq and using the invasion of Iraq to distract Americans attention from the serious economic problems at home.

The "poetic justice" is that Richard Nixon is usually ranked as the worst president in US history - and Bill Clinton is ranked as one of the best.

That's the way it is in the real world.
How things look in the fantasy world you live in - is no doubt quite distorted from the way things really are.

It's really sad that the Republican Party gets worse with each Republican administration. The next one makes the previous one look a shade less menacing.

The republican party is going to keep sliding downhill until the leadership gets their heads out of their asses and faces the harsh fact that both the narrow minded, bible thumping screwballs and the war mongering, tax wasting neocons have to be permanently evicted from the GOP.

What a ridiculous comment... you forgot to include Obama.. he also worked to impeach Nixon! The fact he was a 12 year old shouldn't matter... or that Hillary or many of these people weren't even in government yetl. God go away, this has GOT to be one of more outragious posts I've ever read.

    Since 2009 under Obama

-food stamp recipients up 17 million. Now a record high 47 million americans on food stamps
    -food stamp spending up 100%
-long-term unemployment up more than 100% to 5.3 million.
-unemployment rate up. A record high over 8% for unprecedented 4 years straight
-poverty rate up by 9.5 million people. Now at 46.2 million people (one out of six Americans) All record highs
-disability recipients up. A record high 5.4 million workers and their dependents now collect federal disability
    -home foreclosures up 3 million
-government assistance up. Now 128 million (or 41% of americans) directly receiving government aid
-US military deaths in afghanistan up (1495 in last fours years....630 previous 8 years)
-percentage of homeowners who are underwater on their mortgages a record high (30%)

-American family's net worth down 40%
    -median family income down $3,290

    - new home sales lowest ever in 2011, based on records dating back to 1963

It's so like Mark Lilla to take shortcuts to facts.

The first president to propose a national health care system was Harry Truman - not Richard Nixion. This important distinction is not a "who thought of it first" but a clear indication that the idea was in the public debate and as is with way of the two-party system it is only a bad idea when the other party is in power.

OSHA was a bill singed by Nixion but it was Rep. William A. Steiger and Sen. Harrison A. Williams Jr. who worked for years to get the William-Steiger Act through Congress.

To characterize a "a vast network of federal grants to state and local governments for social programs that cost billions" as something outside of the norm at that time is ludicrous. Republicans - in fact - have always pushed for programs and money to be spent at the state level arguing that to do otherwise is to "expand" government.

Every president in the modern era has expanded federal regulations. In fact, President Obama has had fewer new regulations than President Bush.

So the ONLY real comparison between Obama and Nixion is really health care. ...

Of course, Nixion was impeached and resigned because he broke the law and directed a cover-up to keep the dirt from getting back to him. Breaking and entering and bugging your opponents and using federal dollars to cover it up might not rise to crimes in some minds today, but it surely has nothing to do with how Nixon governed.

these are facts that ignore facts. example, the price of gas before it fell to the level quoted here, was over $4.00 a gallon, then the economy collapsed under g.w.bush, and gas went down to the level quote above. so, do we wish the economy to be in free-fall again to obtain cheaper gasoline? the deficit, its high, how much of that is due to 2 unfunded wars and lower tax rates, again due to g.w.bush? which, using afghanistan as example, is an on-going expense, again due to g.w.bush, which also addresses the casualty rates in afghanistan, who got us in ther without a strategy to exit? g.w.bush. the majority of the rest of the qoutes, poverty rates, foodstamps, etc, can also be directly related to the period 2000-2008, where low tax rates failed to create the jobs we are told they would, that is unless you consider creating jobs overseas and putting americans out of work job creation.
lets not forget, the downgrade of the u.s. credit rating was entriely due to the tea party....

I was going to go through that list point-by-point and use Daniel Patric Moynihan's quote but I think MustangD's response pretty much covers that.

I will add, however, that every independent fact checker would classify your "facts" as not very credible - and in most cases outright wrong. (try looking at unemployment rates during the last financial crisis we went through. There's nothing unprecedented about his 3-to-4 percent increase in unemployment.)

Few can remember? Are you fucking out of your mind? Anyone alive then or having access to Wikipedia knows why impeachment was being pursued. Is this why you're a Republican, because you have a shitty memory?

Saddest speech I have ever seen given. Always will be my favorite president.
His main fault? He didn't throw Haldeman, Erlichman, especially Dean, et al earlier and come out in the front of the story. He had the election sewn up before the campaign even started. The break-in occurred in June, yet for the firestorm didn't begin until the following March.

Sorry, but Hillary was involved in Watergate proceedings. She was fresh out of Yale Law School and worked under John Doar, counsel of the House Judiciary Committee . She advised the House Judiciary Committee and helped research the procedures of impeachment. It has been written that she was later dismissed because of 'unethical practices'. Look it up.

jockfever: In 1974 Hillary Clinton worked as a staff lawyer on the Nixon Impeachment panel of the House Judiciary Committee, a fact which even an Obama lackey might have discovered if he didn't emote first and fact-check later.

Ignorance, especially of economics and history, is the mainstay of the Democrat Party

Don't forget, Richard Nixon was little more than a dupe of Henry Kissinger; as was, Ford a dupe of Nelson Rockefeller & Kissinger.

They, and many accomplices, have planned & executed the dismantling of the USA almost flawlessly; except that, they are still running behind in their own schedule. I no-longer recognize this country I was born in . . .
