A video has surfaced of a woman at an Obama rally in Cleavland, Ohio who claims she was given a free mobile phone, which she called an "Obama phone."

The video was originally featured on DrudgeReport.com, a right leaning publication. Naturally republicans nationwide jumped at the chance to use this video as evidence against President Obama's policies in an attempt to discredit him. It might have worked, except the "Obama phone" does not exist.

This matter is resurfacing now, but it was originally debunked back in 2009 by Factcheck.org. Presently thinkprogress.org has taken the lead charge in debunking this myth.

    Video: VIDEO: The Obama phone?
As it happens the "Obama phone" actually was signed into law by President George W. Bush in 2008. The program is called "SafeLink Wireless." An article from August 2008 confirms this.

How could it be an "Obama phone" when, at that time, the president had barely won the nomination two months prior?

Once again the GOP has reacted without having the facts, and once again they are holding an empty sack.

If this "free phones" bit was part of a set-up for Republicans, it's utterly brilliant.

Apparently, there is no such thing about free phones under Obama. And of course, conservative bloggers are going to run with this "one example" to underscore Mitt Romney's comments about the 47 percent, but what it really does is bring to light Romney & Ryan's free sandwiches for votes (illegal) folly back in April --- APRIL!!! --- and squashes Republicans on two points: 1) Voters are reminded that Romney AND Ryan broke the law in campaigning and 2) Even Republican supporters getting their free sandwiches are identifiably part of the 47%.

“….who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing,to you name it…that’s an entitlement…” MITT ROMNEY

They put this out there to distract everyone from what a bad candidate Romney is and his comments about Obama lowering taxes for the middle class and his contempt for 47% of America he does not give a shit about.

So sad they have to use lies and scare tactics to try and win.

My sense is that SEIU told this woman to talk it up about the free phones myth, knowing that there would be a Republican O'Keefe-wannabe with a camera and the rest would play out as it has so far. The Republican's use of distractions has become so predictable that SEIU has become savvy enough to set-it up for a desirable outcome for Democrats.

Part of the campaign is the voter's perceptions, moreso than reality. Republicans have been capitalizing on that theory for a long time and Democrats rarely capitalize on that.

Scare tactics and lies are what the GOP do best. Especially when they are losing at something. Lie, cheat, steal, and put the fear of God in people to get their way. This is just another in a long list of examples of them doing this.

    Thanks for posting the facts.

You can tell how desperate the Repubs are - not just nationally - but right here on RJ too.
MULTIPLE threads were started on this video by desperate members of the RJ conservaposse.

    It's no wonder they're desperate.
The poor Repubs are saddled with the worst weakest presidential nominee in modern political history - and they know it.

Some of my republican friends and family members on facebook jumped at the chance to post this bull shit too and I had to put them in check too. It was quite hilarious to watch as they thought they had something and it backfired on their asses terribly when I presented the facts. Gotta love it when that happens. Once again Obam gets blamed for Bush's messses. What else is new? icon_rolleyes.gif

For obvious reasons, the Republicans want to talk about ANYTHING but their candidates, Romney and Ryan. So, they dredge up shit like this.

Yup. Their candidate is such an EPIC FAILURE its now time to lie, distort, spin, scare and distract for the GOP. Their favorite game they like to play.

Anything to distract the people from Romney with his foot the mouth disease.

    So typical. icon_rolleyes.gif

The only people likely to believe this story are gullible Teabagger types (and the usual RJ suspects), who were always going to vote Romney anyway.

There's a point in that video where that woman almost gives it away. For a split second, she has a difficult time keeping a straight face. She doesn't even believe the outrageous things coming out of her mouth.

    I noticed that too.

This comes on the heels of Rpmney's 47% comments. The GOP is trying to distract the American public about that by using scare tactics of videos like this women as if everyone on government assistance is like her. Only problem is it backfired because their hero GWB is responsible for this lady's government paid phone.
