Guy hogging 3-4 different weight machines in LA area.

So far I've noticed certain younger guys and rude girls hogging multiple machines. Today there was almost a fight. A white guy jumped on a quad squat machine that a Mexican guy had all of his junk next to. But the Mexican guy was working out on 2-3 other machines far away from the squat. This guy was disabled (fake leg). Well when he came back to the squat machine about 5 minutes later. He pulled off a 45 pound weight from the guy working out and threw it loudly to the side. About 4 guys stood by in case a fight broke out.

What is going on with all these idiots hogging weight machines and not letting people work out? I went to Austin Tx recently to a 24 hour gym owned by Lance Armstrong. Every weight was put away properly. I couldn't believe the difference in the quality of the gym. I guess it was in a nicer area is why.

I had a re-in with a similar guy working out on 4 machines. jumping from one to the other and not letting people work out. He was a kick boxing class instructor according to the manager. Work out of machine. Show off kick boxing behind the machine. Go to the next machine, etc. Leave all his weights on all machines when done. I noticed this rudeness started a few years ago.

Part of the problem is that gyms and their staff are too lazy or chicken shit to tell people to re-rack their weights. They don't want to piss off a member and risk losing a membership. So sadly, it's up to fellow members to keep these douchebags in check. One time I was waiting for a dude to finish up with the squat rack. He was lifting heavy and had about 5 big plates on each side. As soon as he started to walk away with his buddy, I asked him if he was done. He suddenly had a change of heart and helped my unload the bar. icon_rolleyes.gif

The other problem is that some people think they workout harder than the next guy, so they feel entitled to hog up multiple equipment or take their sweet ass time. Honestly, I don't care if a dude can squat 1000 lbs or if he's a champion bodybuilder. Gym etiquette trumps all.

The worst place to get in a fight is my gym, because it's in my home, and there are also swords hanging on the wall...just in case someone is hogging one of my machines. icon_twisted.gif

I sometimes use two "machines" at once in the gym. I have no problem working in with people, or letting people work in. Maybe just ask these rude folks if you can work in. They might surprise you.

I used to think this sort of behavior was no big deal until about 2 weeks ago. I was trying to get on the quad machine, and I asked everyone near by if they were using it because there were still weights on it. everyone said no, and as soon as I got on it this thick neck, no dick, cock mongrel comes from the other side of the gym and was like, "I'm using that!"

Obviously he wasn't. I went off to work on other machines. He came up to me later and tried giving me tips to help my calves. I just nodded and drank my water while staring blankly until he realized his chivalry was lost on me.

There needs to be a rule against stupidity like that. It's just asinine. If you're on the other side of the damn gym there is no reason you should be able to lay claims to another machine. It's not your personal play ground, everyone else pays for their memberships too.

It's so common, I have a prepared speech for the occasion. Goes something like this:

"You have the right to do one set on or with one piece of equipment. When you are done with your set, you have to yield to others. If you think you can claim equipment for yourself that you are not actively using, then I claim the whole gym for me, and you can come back later, when I am done."

24 hour fitness super sport. I bought a gym set and work out at home now. There is a new group of rude people using the gyms now. Not your "good ole guys" type of gyms anymore unless you go to a private club with less people. I loved Santa Barbara Athletic Club when I was living there. One of my favorites - with classier guys.

This guy must be related to the SOB who lies down on the crunch machine to make multiple cell phone calls and glares at you if you make menacing moves like you'd like to use it.

One empty Sunday afternoon I was working on the pec deck, decline bench press and bench press. I got up from the bench press to go back to the decline and earnest young Chet, one of the attendants, had reracked my weights and tossed my water and the latest issue of a professional periodical I can only get by subscription. He has a 45 second rule. We joked about it. He recovered the mag and gave me a new water. I actually appreciate his diligence.

I observed again today a true evil genius at work who manages to monopolize an an entire area and variety of equipment in a manner so confusing that people will assume he's not using half of it, step in to try to use it and get reprimanded by him. For example, today he set up a bench almost under the the dual cable rack (the extra wide kind with the welded chinning bar atop it), put his sweatshirt on the bench, grabbed some dumbbells and then began this arm routine of two 5 exercise, 6 set supersets:

    SUPERSET 1
    standing alternate dumbbell curls
dips on bench with feet on floor
cable curl using EZ curl attachment on one pulley (but you can't use the other)
    seated bicep curl
    crunches

THEN he'll disappear for five minutes to collect some barbells, just leaving a sweatshirt on the bench, expecting no one to try and use the pulley machine in his absence, then return to do:

    SUPERSET 2
dual pulley curls (using both pulleys)
    barbell wrist curls on bench
    quick-switch tricep rope pressdowns
    pullups
    rope crunches

I usually go the area that has nobody working out. If they come over after i got there, i have the right of way. I usually also ask if they want to work in. If i see someone working out, i will try a different machine.
Some people just have no common courtesy. I normally leave them alone and let them be. MOst gyms have lots of options.

have you voiced your complaints to management yet...?

If they don't know it's a problem, then they won't fix it.
