Ooh, I'm an avid gamer. Maybe that's why I look like I'm still in my late teens, early 20s and get asked for ID for everything...

I've been a gamer since my teens. I'm now 39, but I look younger and many people think I'm 30.

    Brilliant.

I didn't quite connect with her first speech, more because of the way she spoke than the information itself. This one is definitely something that I actively engage in a lot though. One of the best things about music, dance, art and theatre, is developing that aspect of play, of interaction, of commitment, etc.

That part about getting moving more and not staying still though. ;) I wonder if the super fast mouse clicking keyboard tapping of hardcore gamers counts...

I had to cut her off.
    Guess I'm not a "gamer..."
Or, maybe it's that I'm not much for people standing up there, yack, yack, yacking...

I've been a gamer ever since I've been able to hold a controller. Explains why I look like I'm 15 instead of 20 icon_confused.gif

Yeah he eats garbage. I am very active and eat fresh food. We are two living side by side examples of the effects of diet, exercise, and physical health. Still got all my hair.

She's not saying that gaming makes you look younger but that it can contribute to behaviors that may prolong one's lifespan.

Actually, she is not even saying that gaming specifically does that, but the responses we get from activities like gaming (that is just her preferred mechanism)... Painting, driving in a fast car along a windy coastal route, and, probably sex, would all have similar reactions. Which is why republicans are so damn flabby and crusted. (Ok I actually know some pretty hot republicans so that was a cheap shot icon_twisted.gif )

I don't put much weight behind what Jane Mcgonigal has to say. She takes legitimate scientific research and then twists it to make it sound like it universally applies to all types of games everywhere, where in actuality it only applies to very specific cases. She makes very broad assumptions based on the smallest kernels of truth.

All her talks revolve around how great video games are in a way that mostly appeals to gamers and over romanticizes the hobby.

I don't mind defending the playing of video games against accusations that they make children violent, anti-social, or contribute to the obesity epidemic, but Jane goes to far to the other extreme in her efforts to do so.

There are real problems amongst the gamer community, (especially the professional gaming community) involving racism, homophobia, and especially sexism in alarming degrees that are far behind the social zeitgeist. You will never hear her talk about these real issues however. It is a shame she doesn't approach the subject earnestly.

My favorite quote of all time (from 15 years ago) is "You don't stop playing because you get old - You get old because you stop playing."

I've lived by that line ever since.
