Smoking and the gym

I am not one to judge what people do with their bodies. To each their own. (HAHA who am I kidding, I'm gay of course I judge)
    but I digress.
I am first confused about smoking in 2012. That is so 1980's it's not even funny. The other beef I have is the gym and smoking.
Now people aren't going to light up in the gym but 2 weeks ago I really cute guy I've enjoyed watching work out was leaving, getting on his bike, with a cigarette hanging from his mouth. -100 points.
Today I walked past a guy who had just come into the gym and he smelled like a house fire.
WHY? Why would you do that to yourself.
Why spend the money on both a gym membership and cigarets.

It's better than smoking and not working out.

Ideally everyone would eat healthy, get plenty of exercise and not smoke but sometimes people have to pick their battles.

To each his own but I always have to wonder whats the point of going to the gym and then standing outside it to have a bogey? Doesn't that kind of interfere with the whole "muscles need pure oxygen to grow" thing?

I'm not going to lie - I'm known from one time or another to light up but NEVER will I light up within mere hours of being inside a gym - before or after.

It's no worse than having a stiff drink or two after a workout, which I frequently do. icon_lol.gif

I agree that cigarettes are passe. I used to have a gym buddy who I'd smoke weed and take energy shots with right before the gym. We were truly ripped.icon_cool.gif

Not the weed, but I do take an energy shot before a long bike ride or a heavy lifting day.

Are you saying that incorporating the weed could get me ripped?

Might be odd. But some bodybuilders smoke to help control their appetite when they're getting ready to compete.

Personally, I don't care if people smoke. It just annoys me when they smoke right in front of the gym entrance. It's like, I gotta walk through their cloud of smoke in order to get to the gym, AND the smoke creeps in through the front and spreads inside. Fuhhh.

Honestly I think part of it was just he was my friend and we pushed each other to lift a ton of weight, but smoking beforehand made it fun, like we were mixing business and pleasure, and we'd get amazing workouts in.

There are many health risks that are involved in smoking and not all of them are apparent or known.

1: increased risk of cancer by damaging the DNA in lung tissues which in turn lead to tumor growth.

    2: tobacco use and impotence.

and here is the big one. for all you men who enjoy have a larger penis or for those of you with smaller penises and smoke:

I miss the bar cars on returning commuter trains. Commuters would get blotto on the ride to their station, then get into their cars and drive home. Having already gone through a couple packs of cigs, natch.

Ewww, gross. Never together... I've lived both lifestyles and prefer to be a smoke free gym bunny. No party and play either!

My gym's right next to a club so sometimes there'll be smokers right next to the gym doors. It kind of pisses me off that the smokers are poisoning people who are trying to improve their health. It also pisses me off that smokers are the ones who get filters while everyone around them gets the full carcinogenic effect.

icon_lol.gif (Lololol, ANOTHER piece of the puzzle. Wow! How many cartons a day DO you smoke anyway, Pro)?!? icon_wink.gif

Smoking is the only drug that kills people who don't do it. Not to mention it's CRAZY gross, too.

Some of my friends I used to work out with are smokers. It would always crack me up that as soon as we left the gym, they'd light up.
It's almost as crazy as people who'd go hiking and have a cigarette on their hike. They're completely missing the point of being outdoors and getting fresh air when they're sucking the cancer stick.

    It's not about health.
    1) They have an addiction, and aren't that serious about quitting or being healthy. At this point pretty much everyone has heard about the health effects and they just don't care.
    2) They go to the gym to look good, not to be healthy. The cigarette will curb their appetite. They don't care that it will also ruin their skin and make them look older, as well as the myriad of other health effects.

I smoke so I'm not going to pass judgement however I found it really funny one morning when I saw the gym instructor at our place lighting up a cigarette while he was waiting for the train to work.

It really tickled me but I quite liked the fact that he wasn't a total health nazi. We all have our vices I guess.
