From the creator of Alien, The Return Of The Living Dead (My #1 FAV Zombie Film Of All Time!!)

Well, it's Halloween season so I figured I'd make a post about what I consider one of the most fun & best Zombie films out there! (Who am I kidding? I watch this film year-round!)

In 1985, the creator of the first ALIEN (no, it wasn't Ripley Scott !) decided to tackle the Zombie sub-genre. So Dan O' Bannon (the creator/screenwriter of ALIEN whom created that species & gave us heroine RIPLEY) took on the task of screenwriter/director of the fun, balls-to-the-wall film THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD. It was a big hit with the horror loving teenage/young adult crowd in the summer of 1985 (only marginally beaten by that same year's A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2).

What Dan O' Bannon created was FINALLY a zombie film (of that time, & hell even now!) that was loud, brash, punk rock, a bit gross, ghoulish, full of energy, & that broke ALL the rules to the zombie film genre as we know 'em (again, even till today!).

As we know zombies generally are killed with destroying the brain. Well, NOT these ghouls that rise out of the cemetery grounds! You can shoot 'em, you can bash 'em, HELL you can even chop 'em up in pieces -- they're reanimated corpses are STILL gonna come after you for some! (which I think outbeats the "scare factor" of this past decades tired & overused medical "infection" zombie's we've all come to know as of now).

In the film, two bubbling coworkers of a medical supply warehouse (located right across the street from RESURRECTION CEMETERY) accidentally unleash a military chemical from a tub in the basement of warehouse containing the "actual" zombies from the "true case" of A NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD years before. The military covered it up & it somehow got into the hands of this warehouse for years. The chemical gas escapes through the buildings pipes & out into the air during a rain storm, & boom(!), the chemical is washed back down into the cemetery soil.

While all the shenanigans of that happening at the warehouse, one of the co-workers group of "punk rock" clique o' friends are chilling & partying in the cemetery, waiting for their bud to get off his shift from his new job at the warehouse. Unbeknownst to them, they get caught right in the middle of the cemetery as the dead literally raise out of the grounds in 100's.

Many have the misconception that this past decade introduced the fast, running zombie. Naw this film did it two decades prior. Not only did these zombies run & hunt ya in packs, but they were SMART! They thought, & could speak! Personally I love love love the type o' ghoulish/rising out of the ground Zombies!

So to those unfamiliar, something out of the past & not part of the norm of today's "infection" zombies (ad nausem), I present you with the creator of ALIEN (& Ripley) - THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD.

Two different trailers containing different footage are below. If any fans are on here of this film, comment the love! icon_twisted.gif

It's awesome in 3D (on a TV that does 2D-3D conversion).

I liked some of the new twists the film put on Zombies (as the op has pointed out) but for me Romero's films are superior just because of the social commentary.

Also Return is a horror comedy so I guess I'm a bit biased since I like my horror serious and scary.

Oh I'm a huge fan of Romero's Dead films. Esp of Night!

Yea "Return" is a horror/comedy, but that doesn't take away fact that I love my horror films serious & scary. I'm a fan of SO many sub-genres of Horror , including the serious. Im not saying that this is "better" than Romero's , I'm just throwing out how much I love the graveyard ghouls coming outta the ground, you don't see that often in zombie films.

It's just a fun lil' flick for the Halloween season.

Trust me I'm not big into comedy/horrors, though this one does tackle both perfectly.

That film could only be bested by Ripley Scott doing a film with bubbling coworkers.

I love the punk rock element to 80's Horror flicks, and totally agree with all said about the movie. Also a lot of the same goes for my favorite horror/comedy Evil Dead/2. I love this time of year and wish I could win once again at another Halloween bash back in the states.

That movie was really creepy and the zombies were fast. And that rocker chick was just weird with her fetish.
