So I've been very sexually responsible for the past year and I just got my physical results today and I'm totally healthy. When I was going to lunch I saw that my company was doing a blood drive. Now in the past going to donate was not even an option because I would travel to India which automatically puts you on a year's deferral but I haven't been back in 2 years so with the happy feeling of my test results I finally decided I would try to donate today. I know gay men are banned from giving blood but considering I've been tested twice in the last 6 months (first was just a free test they were offering at the bar and latest was part of my physical) I did not feel i was putting the blood bank at any risk. So i decided to lie today on the question about sex with men (yes you can judge me for it). Then we came to the question of travel and I was super confident I won't have any problems since I haven't been back to India recently. BUT they just changed the policy last year that if you have EVER had malaria then you get an automatic INDEFINITE DEFERRAL! WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF FUCK YOU GUYS! I'M GOING HOME!

Don't put your phone number on the blood drive sheet. They call you multiple times a day and you have to ask like 10x before your number is removed.

I haven't given since AIDS. I have almost 2 gallons in credits. I don't know if they are valid any more.

If I ever give blood, I'll lie to have it done, then tell them I'm gay on the way out the door just to fuck with them.

As a followup.....Many years ago, I went to donate blood, knowing that technically I couldn't. I was all set to lie and when they asked me the big question, I just couldn't do it. I thought about all the times I lied to myself and others and I couldn't bring myself to do it. So, of course I answered "yes" and got a "thanks, but no thanks."

I'm still rather angry about the policy and am now more than willing to lie (OK, so I'm in a totally different place in my head now). Right now they're asking for donors because the local supply is running short. Does the local blood bank have my name in an electronic file somewhere? Am I permanently axed? There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that I'm not a risk and would love to donate, but not sure if I'm permanently flagged.

    Thoughts?

Well.. if anyone wants to donate blood (only around 20ml at a time) for medical research, let me know. I'm in Australia though ...

I think it's silly that they won't take blood from gay people, especially in today's environment. I think it's cool that you did a white lie for a greater good. Way to go!

I wish I had gotten to do the greater good! icon_mad.gif but since I've had malaria growing up in India as a kid I'm pretty much banned from giving blood till they revise the policy.

With the gay thing I didn't consider lying a big deal since I took all the precautions to protect the blood bank from our supposedly GAY HIV/STD tainted blood. But with malaria I have no choice. I don't want to lie about it because I have no understanding about the risk or why the policy was changed from 1 year deferral to indefinite over the last year. It just sucks being treated like an untouchable for who i am or where I grew up icon_eek.gif

I know that when my big 10 law firm held blood drives I'd be amazed when an HR underling would go up to groups with a clipboard trying to get people to sign up in front of one another, ostensibly to shame people into donating, with the outcome being that people who were prohibited from donating blood due to bloodborne illnesses were publicly put into very awkward positions. Ever since blood drives have left a bad taste in my mouth.

i stopped donating ever since the volunter knocked over the bag, tried to catch it with her claw like nails, puncturing the bag, and exploding my own blood all over the equipment.

    Here are the reasons: Canada:

I'm not sure which agency you went to, but they are apparently not following the CDC and FDA guidelines:

    "FDA Screening Guidelines
Most travelers to an area with malaria are deferred from donating blood for 1 year after their return.
Former residents of areas where malaria is present will be deferred for 3 years.
People diagnosed with malaria cannot donate blood for 3 years after treatment, during which time they must have remained free of symptoms of malaria."
