On October 11, 2012, aging evangelical icon Billy Graham met, prayed with, and in effect endorsed presidential candidate Mitt Romney. But Graham's endorsement backfired when an LGBT rights group discovered an article on the website of Graham's flagship organization, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, apparently authored by Billy Graham himself, that labeled Mormonism a "cult".

In a textbook case of ineffective damage control, Graham's BGEA proceeded to wipe the offending article from the BGEA website but left in place other BGEA website articles that conveyed the same message.

Visitors to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association website who use the site's search engine to search for the term "Mormon" will get six search results; the first will be a page featuring Billy Graham's own definition of what a "cult" is, an explanation that clearly encompasses Mormonism.

On that page, featuring an entry from Graham's My Answer column, Billy Graham explains,

"[Cult] Members reject what Christians have believed for almost 2,000 years, and substitute instead their own beliefs for the clear teachings of the Bible. Often, they add to the Bible by claiming that the books their founder wrote or "discovered" are from God, and have equal authority to the Bible."

Founder of Mormonism Joseph Smith discovered new books of scripture that comprise the Book of Mormon which, according to the Mormon faith, augments and completes biblical scripture.

The BGEA website My Answer column was preceded by a question posed to Graham, "This couple keeps coming to our house and inviting us to come to their assembly hall to study the Bible. I'd like to know something about the Bible, but a friend of mine says this group is a cult. What exactly is a cult? They seem like nice people."

The question mirrored narratives that launch numerous evangelical books attacking Mormonism which designate it as a "cult", including the 1998 book Mormonism Unmasked , by R. Philip Roberts, which opens with a chapter titled "Mormons on Your Doorstep".

Mormonism Unmasked is published by the B&H Publishing Group, a division of LifeWay Resources , the main publishing wing of the Southern Baptist Convention, which officially designates Mormonism as a cult and claims 16 million members - slighter more than the estimated number of Mormons worldwide, about 14 million.

LifeWay publishes several books attacking Mormonism. CEO of LifeWay is Thom S. Ranier, who also happens to have an article published on the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association website, in which Ranier describes his travels with his wife across the United States, announcing in the article's title that,BOLD TEXT GOES HERERESIZED TEXT GOES HERECOLORED TEXT GOES HERE

I thought everyone knew that Mormonism was a cult. It need to be more widely known before election day, because that one "single issue" will be the fall of this country of the Moron gets in office.

    All religions are cults.
But, I don't think the Mormon religion would have much of an effect if a Mormon got elected president.

A lot of people feared that the Pope would be running the country if John Kennedy (a catholic) got elected to the presidency.

Billy Graham has always been a pretty good guy (IMHO), but he's seriously fucked up when it comes to his beliefs against gay marriage.

And, if I'm not mistaken, he's endorsing Romney (a Mormon), while insisting that we all need to follow the teachings of the bible. Strange.

For the hardcore evangelicals who are uncompromising in their Biblical beliefs, they would probably give LOTS of "fucks."

Trust me, I've encountered those types in my life...

How vain of you to identify yourself as representing the "American voting public".

But more to the point, is why do you encourage us here to support the most officially declared anti-gay Presidential candidate in the history of the US?

Oh, I know you claim you aren't encouraging us to vote for Romney. Another of your little semantic games, more insulting to us than persuasive. You bash Obama & Democrats at every opportunity, and praise Romney & Republicans. Yet you claim to remain neutral in this election. Yeah, right...

I recall a certain southbeach1500 who likewise claimed he was a political Moderate. You're both cut from the same discredited cloth.

I remember the 1960 election (I'm that old), when Republicans claimed that Democrat Kennedy would be a tool of the Roman Catholic Pope. So that Kennedy had to declare that he would not take orders from the Vatican, but would honor the separation of church & state as the Constitution requires.

How come the Republicans this time around don't have a problem with Romney's religion and his blind allegiance to his cult? Should Romney declare he won't take orders from the First President of the LDS? Are we to become a Christian theocracy?

Well, you probably can't answer that. Your sole focus is getting that Black out of the White House. And of course in harming gays. We figured that out a long time ago. And all your posted pics of Hyacinth, your false & unsubstantiated claims that I am drunk, and other personal attacks on me won't change that.

Billy Graham was also a supporter of Richard M. Nixon.

Oh, I know you claim you aren't encouraging us to vote for Romney.

Please cite a single example in which I have encouraged YOU, or anyone else here to vote a certain way. Vote for whomever you like, that's your American right.

ART_DECO saidYou bash Obama & Democrats at every opportunity, and praise Romney & Republicans. Yet you claim to remain neutral in this election. Yeah, right...

Actually, I'm pretty sure I posted a dozen times or so, if not more, that I was "undecided" about how I would vote -- and I was. I think I said that I was waiting for the debates to really make up my mind --- and I did --- and I have. It only took the first debate for me (and seemingly many others) to see pretty clearly that Mitt Romney had the passion, knowledge, and leadership skills to be our next POTUS. I do not dislike President Obama, never have, I just don't think he has what it takes in this particular point in our history to move us forward in "The Bigger Picture" which is a world economy that is increasingly having major repercussions on our own. Hey, that is just an opinion, you are certainly free to disagree and cast your vote accordingly. It should be noted that my vote for Mitt Romney has absolutely NOTHING whatsoever to do with social issues -- most of which I'm not really in synch with him.

ART_DECO saidHow come the Republicans this time around don't have a problem with Romney's religion and his blind allegiance to his cult? Should Romney declare he won't take orders from the First President of the LDS? Are we to become a Christian theocracy?

Look, I can only speak for myself, but in my personal experience with mormons who I have known over my lifetime, I have seen nothing but quality, warm, giving people, who stand by their values and give generously to their community. Is it a cult? Probably. Most religions, if not all of them, are a cult of sorts. Regardless, say what you want about the mormon faith, but they must be doing something right...at least that is my opinion based on all of the mormons I have been blessed to know. I look at Mitt Romney...his solid 41 year marriage...his 5 fine sons...his track record as a good, caring, god-fearing husband, father, and leader...and it is hard for me to not believe that he would be a really good POTUS, because I feel whole-heartedly that he would be. Again, just MY opinion, but I can pretty much say confidently that millions would agree, and they are increasing in numbers by the day. Of course, you are free to disagree.

ART_DECO saidYour sole focus is getting that Black out of the White House. And of course in harming gays.

A comment like this barely even deserves a response because it's so entirely off-base and hugely offensive. I will let others judge your words, because I think they pretty much speak volumes. 'nuff said.

What a liar you are. You have bashed Obama from the day he became President, and praised Romney from the day he became the Republican nominee.

Yah know, guys here do remember these things. So you just became a Romney supporter after the first debate? Really? REALLY? Your credibility is running at about zero right now. icon_rolleyes.gif

As Nazi Minister of Propaganda Dr. Josef Goebbels said, repeat a lie often enough and people will begin to believe it. Keep saying you only became a Romney supporter after the first Presidential debate and someone here will actually believe you.

Problem is, mon cher, this is RealJock. And the guys here are pretty smart, a lot of them smarter than either you or me, with good memories. So that your attempt at Republican revisionism isn't gonna fly too far here.

You just became a Romney supporter after the debate? OK, if that's your story today. But remember you've now said that you ARE a Romney supporter, and your previous sham of pretending to be neutral in this election no longer applies. OMG, I can't believe I've wasted this many keystrokes on such a known political con artist. icon_rolleyes.gif
