Having been born in 1981, I obviously grew up with a huge & unhealthy dosage of horror films of the 80's " VHS " era.

I like many if not all types of the horror sub-genres, but one I def absolutely love are many of the FUN good time horror films from this 80's period. When I say FUN, I don't mean "funny", but something that was made to sit back & enjoy as opposed to being a punishing experience.

The movies had a heart & passion behind 'em, had awesome practical special effects (it's what sold the tickets & got asses into theater seats after all), & for me just a overall good time. Gave me something to look forward to, even here in my early 30's! Can't complain about having something to look forward to & escape into. icon_cool.gif

Below I posted a few trailers of just a couple o' my faves of this era. Below are trailers for: Fright Night, The Blob, The Slumber Party Massacre, Demons, The Gate, Night of the Creeps, etc...

List which ones you enjoyed either growing up with, currently seeing for the first time, or post a trailer for it! icon_wink.gif

Ok. So yeah you have A Nightmare on Elm Street, Gremlins, The Shining, Hellraiser, The Fly, Creep Show, Pet Semetary, Poltergeist, They Live, Aliens, and Child's Play.

I'm still somewhat partial to the movies from the 90s, movies like Scream, Final Destination, Leprechaun, The Craft, Army of Darkness, The Sixth Sense, Interview with a Vampire, Arachnaphobia, and Seven.

Me too and I was already pretty scared of clowns. I think it's the reason why drag queens freak me out now.

Not a film or 80's (though I think the very first season was in '89) but Tales from the Crypt should def get honorable mention in here, some of the best comical horror ever! Got all seven seasons on DVD. Still watch them all the time.

    The Monster Squad

    monster_squad_small.jpg

Essentially, The Little Rascals take on the Universal pantheon of monsters, but it's not as twee as you might expect. The kids swear; are put in dire peril at the hands of the monsters; Dracula (sexy, suave, lethal) keeps girls in closets and roughly handles the tag-along kid sister, calling her a bitch; real weapons are deployed with gruesome consequences; and everyone has to figure out what a virgin is so they can perform a magical ritual.

    Alone In The Dark

    alone+in+the+dark+1982+3.jpg

A city-wide power outage liberates four institutionalized psychopaths -- a deranged Vietnam vet, a pyromaniac preacher, an obese child molester, and a mysterious character called "The Bleeder" -- who terrorize the family of their new psychiatrist, believing he's killed the beloved therapist he replaced. Very blackly humorous and quite suspenseful. The Sick Fucks perform "Chop Up Your Mother."

    Q -- The Winged Serpent

    high009qthewingedserpent.jpg

Ritualistic murder/flayings resurrect an Aztec serpent-god that makes its nest in the spire of the Chrysler building and ventures out to carry hapless Manhattanites off for food. Terrific cast, fun effects, great old New York local color, and just the right amount of laughs.

    Cheerleader Camp

    cheerleader+camp+5.JPG

Wildly enjoyable, knee-slappingly hilarious late '80s slasher that's a great satire of the bullshit dream of American success-at-all-costs. Wacky dialogue, fab setting, a nicely sympathetic performance by Betsy Russell, and arguably the most beautiful cast of actresses ever featured in a Dead Teenager movie.

    Aerobicide

Tragedy by tanning bed (!) is the apparent motive for a killing spree perpetrated in a health club by a murderer who kills with an immense safety pin (!!). This is chock the fuck full o' big hair, leg warmers, gratuitous shots of gyrating bodies, a gooey '80s soundtrack, and 85 minutes of sheer cheese. Plenty of tits and ass from the cast. The ladies' are nice too.

    Halloween.

The only one that truly terrifies me, actually watching it right now. I don't know why I do this to myself.

80's films were not HD, not 3D, and the effects and sound quality sucked.

Gimme a newer movie with eye and ear candy. icon_cool.gif

    The Stuff

The snack food craze taking America by storm is actually a parasitic, terrestrial life form that ends up eating you!

It's still better for you than RedBull, though.

    Chopper Chicks In Zombietown

Eight chicks on the rag must save a backwater town from a zombie massacre. 'Nuff said.

Naw many of the newer ones are BLAND, copies cuz there's no originality anymore/no heart put into it, & lets be real: CGI effects SUCK!

Hence the greatness that was the 80's for the Horror film genre! icon_cool.gificon_lol.gif

& many of the brand new HD TV's kinda suck. Sorry but that "Soap Opera Pan & Scan" effect isn't....pleasing to the eyes. It actually ruins the look/feel/movement of older films. I know I'm not alone on this topic! haha
