Some writer had the brilliance to take almost all the ABBA music from the 70’s and 80’s and wrap a story around it. When we were in London this past winter it was playing as a stage musical and now that I have seen the movie, I wish we had seen it on stage. They even managed to work in a gay couple towards the end, not to speak of the guys dancing on the beach half naked in one of the best music numbers. It was hilariously funny but yet emotionally moving. In a word it was brilliant.

Saw Mamma Mia twice as a stage show - Southern CA and Vegas, then as a movie. Give me the stage show any day. Much closer to the action and you can keep you eyes on the dancer that particularly strikes your fancy. LOL
I am not sure that I am up to the new sing-along version that is being released to the theaters.

I've seen the stage musical twice and now the movie. For great acting, the movie was fantastic, but the singing was a bit lacking. For great singing, the stage musical had it hands down.

I don't mean to overly criticize the acting in the stage musical though, from ten rows back it was a bit difficult to get the nuances of the individual actors like one could in the movie.

I enjoyed the movie, and the stage musical.

Did you notice the 15 second cameo by the group ABBA towards the end?
They were the Greek Gods looking down on the wedding. It also falls in line with the song "Winner Takes It All".

Muriel's Wedding was an Oz film wasn't it?

It's been so long since I saw it.

The story line sucks in the movie....what a load of crap....

the beginning was great....the music is great....but it all falls apart at about mid-movie

I discussed this recently on another thread....

I hate inconsistencies and unresolved issues in movies....

What the hell happened to the 3 "fathers" leading Sofie down the aisle???

They each expected to lead the daughter down the aisle. But at the wedding none of them show up to do it. They just take seats in the congregation.

Also the daughter asks the mother to give her away and there is no "discussion" in the movie about the conflict in all these plans.

    WTH is with that?

Ah, that's such a cute (and gay) way of ending a post.

Yeah your right about the oddity of this. The father played by Pierce Bronson was told by Meryl Streep that she was to give away her daughter just before the wedding. Colin Firth's part was gay so he probably new that he was not the father and the other father showed some reluctance to give away his daughter earlier in the movie. But, yeah, that was a bit sloppy.
