Romney did oppose a government bailout of the U.S. auto companies

""You keep trying to ... airbrush history here," Obama responded. "You were very clear that you would not provide government assistance to the U.S. auto companies even if they went through bankruptcy. You said that they could get it in the private marketplace. That wasn’t true."

Romney did oppose a government bailout of the U.S. auto companies in a 2008 New York Times op-ed, "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt." At the end of the op-ed, he noted: "The federal government should provide guarantees for post-bankruptcy financing and assure car buyers that their warranties are not at risk."

But post-bankruptcy financing is not the same as financing during the bankruptcy process, when these companies were still vulnerable and needed outside money to keep functioning. And in late 2008, lending had frozen. As The Huffington Post's Dave Jamieson noted last week:

Those companies did, in fact, eventually go through managed bankruptcy, as Romney noted. But back in 2008, Romney had argued against federal aid for the automakers. Given how difficult it was to borrow money during the financial crisis, it's doubtful that the GM and Chrysler would have made it through the managed bankruptcy process without the intervention of the federal government."

I seem to recall Socal quoted quite a lot from that crappy website. How many sock accounts does one man need?

If this is true, than Romney will most likely have an extremely difficult time winning both Michigan and Ohio.

    Oh, it's true alright.

Would you like to see the actual article Mittens wrote (instead of topathlete's red herring) ?

    Voila!

Read the article, not just the headline. I suspect the headline was written by NY Times editor to suggest a different position than what is actually in the article.

P.S. If you want to intelligently comment on US affairs, you might read up on the bankruptcy laws, especially the chapters cited in the article. Did you know by the way that several airlines operating today went through bankruptcy protection and reorganization? Difficult concept, eh?

lol, I read the entire article. Did you? He opposed the bailout. Structured bankruptcy is not the bailout Romney was opposed to ( and a structured bankruptcy is hardly a bailout, lol. He was opposed to the stimulus bailout offered the auto industry. Mitt knows more than you do, and because I understand what he said in the article, so do I.

Here topathlete, the beginning of the article, which I think you missed:

"IF General Motors, Ford and Chrysler get the bailout that their chief executives asked for yesterday, you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye. It won’t go overnight, but its demise will be virtually guaranteed.

Without that bailout, Detroit will need to drastically restructure itself. With it, the automakers will stay the course — the suicidal course of declining market shares, insurmountable labor and retiree burdens, technology atrophy, product inferiority and never-ending job losses. Detroit needs a turnaround, not a check."

Uh...the discussion point is Caslon's; it's his topic. See topic title for discussion point.

It's a major site. I'm sure many read it and quote from it. No time for any of your games.

This is clearly the response of a sock account. No doubt about it.

It is utterly pathetic that these discredited slime balls must resort to crawling back to the forums via sock accounts. When will the gay Right get the message that, not only are they treated as outcasts by the political party they so loyally support, but they have also become pariahs within their own community?

Oh, I think the Brit is getting pissed.

The anger and fear is palpable. "Discredited slime balls"? "Pariahs of the community"? Really? Your meltdown is clearly starting ahead of schedule. See... icon_wink.gif

I saw what I believe to be the most reasonable electoral results on Real clear politics (with no swing state doubts).. based on complete polling as of 10/23.
I agree with the basics (and if in error, it would be to the repub side).

Obama wins.... 281 electoral votes to 257... and thats giving the slipshod car salesman Florida, NC, Virginia and Obama carries Iowa, Ohio, WI and Nevada.

    Looking forward to the celebration....

    Yup.
Topathlete is clearly our old friend SoCal.

The phrasing and the cuckoo insistent rejection of reality and facts is classic SoCal.

And how funny that SaggyTits SoCal would pick a handle like Topathlete.
    Topathlete?
    Not so much, SoCal!
