My only experience with gay.com was someone redirecting me to that site to see a fake profile someone had made with my pics.

ack, well it wasnt great. but atleast there was a place to congregate, to be honest most of my dates actually came from hot or not back in the day. I dont know where to look or how to associate with gays anymore apparently.

Maybe that site was different when it started. But I checked it out a year or two ago, and it just seemed like the gay version of Yahoo. You create an account and get bombarded with advertisements.

The reason it had a lot more local gays is because they probably had a lot more fake profiles.

I think RJ needs more brazilian people.

I know more Brazilians in real life than there are Brazilians on RJ.

So far I haven't seen one I wouldn't "do" if the attraction were mutual. icon_cool.gif

I have to admit gay.com was pretty cool when it first started about 15 or so years ago. I was one of the first to join. That was way back when they were asking people if they wanted to help monitor the rooms, before it became a site of ads. But then it became inundated with ads then bots in the chat and then it start delivering virus' via the chats. And still it delivers crap that will install on your computer and pop up ads on you screen when you visit sites like Amazon ... I almost never go there anymore

I started on gay.com in 1999. It was a busy night if there were 2000 people online, worldwide. Does anyone remember the color schemes when it started? It started going south around 2003/2004 with the apparent fake profiles outnumbering real profiles.

Not sure if I remember correctly but they were pure html pages, with very little scripting and no java .. they were sort of cream colored, or was it light blue .. too long ago to remember

Gay.com was cool, and so was AOL.

In both of those sites, you had to jump into a chat room when you logged on.

It was either by location, by age, or by interest (and you could join more than one.)

Because you didn't want to sit there being bored doing nothing, you'd pick out the most attractive guy who was in one of the rooms with you and just start chatting.

Usually ended up with some small talk, some trading pics, and then whatever came out of it.

You could buddy list guys on there (similar to a YIM or Skype list), so the next time they logged on, you would def chat again and keep the conversation going... usually with more pics... more curiousity... more questions.

I got lots of dates on those sites... but even better... LOTS of friends. I'm still in touch with about 5 guys who I met on AOL as real life friends.

Plus what was cool about AOL was that straight/curious guys didn't have to say they were gay (or go to an exclusively gay site) to jump into a gay chat room. So it was easier and less traumatic for them to take things at their own pace.

Of my 5 friends, all of them were gay/bi and a couple of them even had bf's, but all of them were playing it straight IRL at the time.

And I think this makes a difference: AOL had no porn ads (I don't think gay.com did either). So you didn't feel dirty for being there. It was just real chat.

Because people had to pay for AOL, there weren't fake people there either. Peer moderation is also a good idea!

Gay.com was a place where guys with certain problems could congregate. I was one of them. Where have those chat rooms gone?

gay.com died when all the bots started overwhelming it and hackers started infecting everyones pc with viruses in the private chats
