The greatest percentage of dumb people are poor.
And, dumb people are quick to believe scare tactics and false promises.
So, they tend to vote Republican.

For great insights and anecdotes on the topic of why the poor tend to vote Republican nowadays

READ 'DEER HUNTING with JESUS' by Joe Bageant.

"After thirty years spent scratching together a middle-class life out of a “dirt-poor” childhood, Joe Bageant moved back to his hometown of Winchester, Virginia, where he realized that his family and neighbors were the very people who carried George W. Bush to victory. That was ironic, because Winchester, like countless American small towns, is fast becoming the bedrock of a permanent underclass."

The Poor aren't so much voting for Republicans as much as they are VOTING FOR GOD. Since the 70s, their preachers have told them to vote Republican----so they do-------without thinking.

Republicans have also catered to and courted THE UNINFORMED VOTER.
The Poor have been easy targets for Karl Rove and Company.

Dumb? I don't think it's about intelligence. I think it has more to do with social psychology.

There was a study conducted a few years ago that help explained why someone who had low means would trust someone or something that would help their means at the end. The conclusion was that those who struggled or barely got by felt that if more people benefited from a "social safety net" of sorts feared that in the competition of earning more, they would find themselves further in the bottom of socioeconomic standing, even if it weren't true and they knew it.
