The Force is strong in Disney, as the House of Mouse has officially landed in the "Star Wars" business.

The Walt Disney Company announced on Tuesday (October 30) their acquisition of Lucasfilm Ltd., the production company behind George Lucas' epic "Star Wars" series. The full extent of what the $4.05 billion deal will yield remains unknown, but one project is already in the offing: "Star Wars Episode 7."

Little is known about the "Star Wars" sequel other than a 2015 release date — the same year that Disney releases a different blockbuster-in-the-making, a sequel to "Marvel's The Avengers." Lucas himself weighed in on the news in an official statement released by Disney.

"For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next," he said. "It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I've always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I'm confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney's reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products."

Disney's press release promises "more feature films expected to continue the Star Wars saga and grow the franchise well into the future." Indeed, the company already has designs on "Episode 8" and "Episode 9," with a new "Star Wars" movie intended to hit theaters "every two to three years.

In joining the Disney brand, Lucasfilm now resides under the same house that shelters Marvel and Pixar. How long until an animated "Star Wars" / "Avengers" crossover, we wonder?

great news... disney is going to no doubt find a terrific young director and writer to do this new trilogy... it will be their lord of the rings... they clearly bought lucas out with that in mind since it was the first thing they talked about... it's very important to them

if you told me lucas himself was making 3 more i'd have vomited up all the cum i've swallowed in the last 20 years...

but this is awesome... lucas will consult only and not write or direct... there's already a story arced for 3 movies...

the question for me is do they recast (leia, luke and han) and just go a few years later after return of the jedi? or do they (more likely in my opinion) jump ahead 25-30 years... young new cast... but also get to use harrison ford and carrie fisher etc as a link? that would be awesome. or just go way further ahead and dont use any of them

as long as they get a great writer and director this could make up for the last 3 movies

I've decided to be optimistic about it. I'm looking forward to seeing a new Star Wars movie in the future. (or one every two years apparently). It's certainly a plus that Lucas is out of the picture now. Finally the title "A New Hope" is relevant again.

I also think, in an effort to save his immortal soul, Lucas should take that 4.5 billion he got for this and invest it in finding a way to go back in time and stop himself from making Episodes l-lll. icon_neutral.gif

Disney would do a better job. I hope they release the original trilogy on blu-ray without all of the stupid edit Lucas did.

No matter what the hell goes on in the making of it, I won't bother seeing it, until I hear from friends, family, and critics on it first... then I'll consider seeing it. If its worth seeing, it won't be easily avoided... otherwise, just another load of hype for the shitter.

I don't think the words that came out of the actors' mouths in those films ever qualified as a script.

Disney, Pixar, LucasArts... all in the same company. Their next movie might be epic. Might be...

    What no Jar-Jar fans here?

Frankly, Disney can only improve things from what Lucas did with the last three movies. Still they could manage a Howard the Duck. Probably the best thing they could do is to cast a HOT young cast. What would Star Wars have been without lovely Luke?

    My thoughts EXACTLY!

The biggest thing I am concerned about, is disney making this too PG. That would ruin it for me completely, and they do that often.

Help us Obi Wan Kenobi, you're our only hope!
I guess it's the start of a new era in Star Wars. Prequel to the prequel? Sequel to the originals? Gap-filler between III and IV?

I'm excited for a new trilogy of Episode 7, 8, and 9. But I'm not so sure about DISNEY doing it. icon_eek.gificon_confused.gif

There have been several series' of books that pick the story up after Jedi and tell the story of Princess Lea and Han Solo's twins being the birth of a new Jedi generation. If they pull from those stories to create the movie it might be good, but if they totally rewrite, there will be a lot of fans pissed.

I know this because I am a geek that read some of the books when I was in high school... icon_redface.gif
