Iowa senate races also in crosshairs

"A conservative anti-same-sex marriage group that is waging a campaign to oust an Iowa Supreme Court justice who was on the bench when the court issued a unanimous decision legalizing gay marriage is also targeting Iowa Senate races in hopes of turning control of the Senate over to Republicans.

Bob Vander Plaats and his group, The Family Leader, are campaigning to remove Iowa Supreme Court Justice David Wiggins for his role in the 2009 decision in which the group says the court overstepped its bounds by legislating from the bench. But Vander Plaats says it’s the Senate, where Democrats hold a 26-24 majority, where he hopes to make the biggest impact.

“We’ve been very interested in gaining control of the Iowa Senate and very involved in the six senate races,” Vander Plaats said. “If I had to choose, I would take the Iowa Senate.

“The reason we’re going after the Senate is to get back to codification of marriage law immediately and to pass a marriage amendment.”

Vander Plaats said he is confident Republicans will succeed in taking control of the Senate and predicted current Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal, D-Council Bluffs, will be defeated. He also thinks Wiggins will be removed."
