Researcher friends have been hinting at a vaccine in the last 6 months or so. In the same talk they always bring up the dramatic increase in young men becoming pos.

    On the one side, Awesome!

On the other....There will be a period in which everyone decides that HIV was the only worry ever, and off the condoms will come, and many more a sex party will be had by all........people are stupid.

Then the news will get onto another big STI and it all goes round.

The best result that can come of this is that now victims of HIV-positive rapists aren't given a death sentence.

Not so fast... So far, this is just a phase I clinical trial, which means that it is primarily designed to show that the vaccine is safe. But at this stage we know very little whether it is effective. In fact, the vaccine was given to already infected people, to reduce the consequences if it wasn't as safe as assumed. But it's still good news.

It's promising, but note that Phase 1 doesn't test whether or not a vaccine is effective at all. Phase 1 merely tests whether or not there are adverse reactions and determines the proper dosage to give. Phase 2 is the phase in which efficacy is tested, so we will have to wait for Phase 2 results to come in before we know if this vaccine actually works.
