On this Veterans Day we must acknowledge our gay & lesbian service members who risk their lives to protect ours while their families are denied the critical protections of marriage because of the Defense of Marriage Act. DOMA prevents the federal government from respecting the legal marriages of same-gender couples & forces the military to treat married gay & lesbian service members & veterans & their families differently than it treats all other service members & their families. DOMA unfairly denies married same-gender couples the 1,138+ federal protections & responsibilities that the government provides to other married people, dividing Americans into first-class & second-class citizens, with first-class & second-class marriages. Unlike all other married couples gay married couples are denied such important protections as Social Security survivor benefits, immigration rights, family & medical leave & the ability to pool resources as a family without unfair taxation. Army veteran & OutServe-SLDN Executive Director Allyson Robinson stated, “Today, we remember all who have served our nation so honorably; but we reserve a special remembrance for all those who have provided the same service, taken the same risks & made the same sacrifices to keep us safe, yet are treated as second-class citizens by the country they are sworn to protect.

If you can afford to give EVEN ONE DOLLAR to the Wounded Warrior Project,

    PLEASE, PLEASE DO IT !

And the wounded are not the only soldiers who need our attention.

Every soldier and his/her family has made a sacrifice to serve.

IF you or a family member or friend hasn't been in the military,

you might be thinking that there are generous benefits for our soldiers and..

    they need no further assistance.

    NOT TRUE!

Sadly....DISGUSTINGLY....we've had these folks serve and then

our government has not fulfilled our obligations to them.

PLEASE, beyond giving money, DEMAND THAT YOUR CONGRESSMAN

represent you in funding programs for OUR VETERANS.

Armistice Day for the rest of the world---remembering the 37 million dead from the first world war.

As much as I sympathize with the appalling treatment of veterans---and acknowledge that this is a part of what we should be thinking about---I think it's important to remember that the main point of armistice day is to remember the horrifying consequences of total war... and to resolve to avoid it.

In an ALL VOLUNTEER military, there are two kinds of people who join:

Those who don't see any other prospect for their lives. They are desperate for a job, even with the dangers involved.

The other type are those who FEEL THE CALL OF DUTY. These kids are civic minded. They don't wait for others to do a job that needs doing.

When the Iraq War was being sold to the American public,

some of the best and brightest young people chose to serve.

WE LOST TOO MANY OF THEM.....and it is our loss.

These are the kids who would have continued answering the call, throughout the lives they should have had.

They are the volunteers who help solve our problems, working where society needs them.

INSTEAD, we robbed their families of their love....and wasted their promise for all of us.

Bush/Cheney...Donald Rumsfeld and the NeoCons didn't just waste a Trillion Dollars.

They stole and wasted something more valuable.

OUR SACRED DUTY is to make sure that our soldiers are protected when they serve this country.

    And RESPECTED WHEN THEY RETURN.
