Gym Ettiquete rant

I go to a principally straight gym; in 2 years of going there, I have only seen a couple guys I assume to be gay - maybe my gaydar is broken, but I doubt it. This gym has members from every ethnic group you can imagine, and probably 5 percent are black. I belong to this gym mainly because it has a halfway decent pool. The gym is large and fairly well equipped. It has a basketball court. There are always guys there who know each other and have quiet conversations in the locker room. Then there is the subset of gym goers who are apparently not capable of speaking to each other at a normal voice level - they don't talk, they shout - always. They shout from the hot tub to guys in the shower area - a distance of about 15 feet, and they shout to each other when they're standing 6 feet apart. If if they are at one end of the locker room, you can be assured you can hear every word of their conversations at the other and a distance of about 60 feet. They are not exactly speaking the Kings English so one cannot understand everything they say. They are all black, and in the 30 to middle age range. (Not all black guys I encounter in the locker room act in this manner, but most seem to.) I get the impression they are lower class, but then I wonder how they can afford to pay for the membership at this gym . I used to gouh to gay gyms (but no pools) and never experienced this kind of noisy behavior amomg gym members. It's annoying enough, that I am checking out other possible gyms with pools. There is probably no hope for this particular gym. It's the same kind of behavior I see when walking down the street when there are unemployed lower class black guys encountering each other - everyone gets to hear their conversations from a block away. I have not experienced this kind of behavior from the black professional men I know, nor from black gay men I know. Anyone else experience this in a gym? I'd rather be cruised then have to listen to this noise.

All very politically correct, these responses. I agree that there is a note of racism in the question but there is also some validity to the observation. I don't think the truth has anything to do with race but I do think class plays the prominent role. People who grow up feeling like they are at the bottom of the heap sometimes do compensate with actions to declare they don't care what others think and because many in society think blacks are inferior (usually lower class whites), it is often disadvantaged blacks. But I've seen this phenomenon with low class whites just as often. Just look at the bumper stickers on their trucks.

And I was thinking about starting a topic about my office mate who eats his animal crackers too loudly.

    Trolllll.

But I can understand why you would want your photo's private as I'm sure if they were public you'd have to update them too regularly as your face gets re-arranged.

Make a small cookie sheet in the shape of a rifle. Figure out how to make animal cracker mix. Put the mix in the cookie sheet, bake it however long it takes, take it to work, point it at him, and tell him it's animal cracker season and he's going to get the animals hurt if he doesn't quieten down.

Yes, headphones do wonders! I also think if you can't beat them join them- however that phrase goes. Just talk to them it makes you feel part of the group.

There is no doubt about it. Different cultures have different sensibilities, courtesies, etc.

I've only been awakened at 0400 by Hip Hop by one sort of people. I've only had a gun pulled on me by that same sort of people.

Given negative experiences, it's very easy to develop stereotypes, especially, without exception, when they come from that same culture.

Some cultures are just the opposite, and extremely quiet, and very subtle...everyone falls into line. Courtesy is everything in some cultures.

Many Americans fall somewhere in the middle.

Gym manners are incredbily bad in most areas in The South. Folks are just rude in The South. In Dallas, it's a passive aggressive thing that many folks call Dalitude.

I saw it today, several times at the gym.

And, folks are lazy; clueless; indifferent...just plain ignorant.

Most gym management lacks any real leadership (although there are exceptions) on folks who don't pick up their weights, sit in the way...are clueless.

The folks that misbehave either don't care, or have never been taught how to behave properly...or...enjoy being antagonistic. As often as not, that's the case.

You have to just ignore it, because you can't really fix it. I resolve that I'm going to pick up some asshole's weights every time I go the gym. It sends a message to others: "I'm more important. I don't care. My time has more value. Fuck you." I've come to regard it as exercise that lazy, ignorant, people won't do.

Two nights ago, on the way home, some guy in a big silver pickup truck laid on the horn, thinking I should drive faster. I slowed down so he could pass. He didn't. Instead, he laid on the horn, tailgated me, and drove into a no passing zone. I slowed down further, and eventually pulled off the road. (It's Texas, and he could have a gun. LOL) As expected, he was in that particular culture that seems to have a particular lack of common courtesy.

Maybe he grew up in parts of Texas where there's a peculiar driving custom, though technically illegal. I encountered it a lot west of San Antonio.

Where 2-lane roads have wide shoulders, if a vehicle comes up behind you it's expected you'll pull off the marked roadway onto the side, but keep your speed up. Then the other vehicles passes in your former lane, after which you pull back into it yourself. If you don't notice the guy behind you he'll honk to prompt you to get out of the way.

It's just the normal way of driving in that area, if a bit risky, since your right tires are nearly on the grass & gravel, running over dead armadillos. So maybe that's where that pickup truck was from, and the guy assumes everyone conforms to that driving custom.

Were you by chance driving in the left lane?

Oh those crazy blacks. They are so loud and lazy and crazy. What can we do? By the way, while all the white people are all in agreement with your amazing skills at calling out loud black people talking loudly, just how did you learn to read a persons education level and earning power just by hearing their words? That is a skill people in our HR department could use some training in.

If I were you, I'd seriously look into a new gym, but be careful, some of those gays working out in gyms have been known to break out in song and dance moves, I've seen this numerous times in movies.

What might seem one way to you may be very different to others. I would encourage you to igmore the shouting and focus on what you are there to do... but if it does bother you, I would look for another gym.

I can see how that sounded racist to some, but I was only being factual. These guys act like the guys I often had to walk by on my way to a government office located next to subsidized housing where a lot of recently released prison inmates lived - all of that same racial group. I expected a lot more flaming. I don't see myself as a racist - I had a black business partner for 10 years, have had sex with black men, and I think Denzel Washington is (or was) hot. As some of you pointed out it, it really is a class thing. I will find another gym. I think this gyms is selling discounted memberships to get more people in - including guys who otherwise could not afford to join - they may be losing money. I don't want to associate with lower class types of any race. I don't have any experience with rednecks or other lower class whites, except from seeing caricature on TV, but if they act in the same way, I would not want to be around them either. The lower class has equal rights, but I don't want to be around them. I expect guys to shout and carry on at football games and parties and the like - but not in the gym. I'm not an aristocrat, and not in the upper 0.1 per cent. If I were, I would have my own pool and gym, or be going to an expensive private club. Looks like my next house will come with a pool.

Hey, As a member of the RJ, Southern Region Redneck Association, I am horribly offended. We would like to say... we are way classier than this thread...

    Bravo...

I'm rather enjoying the fact that I can't become upset by this thread. I suppose I'm saving my energy in order to shuffle off to the gym and channel my blackness-induced class-driven lung power. Watch out Castro branch gym goers. Your ability to use headphones or ask someone to lower their voice is powerless against me!
