"In other words, McConnell’s strategy of categorical opposition has been a tactical and strategic failure. Not only will Obama stay president for the next four years, but he will implement the final plank of the American welfare state — universal access to health insurance — without Republican input. The Obama agenda is here to stay, and to a large degree, Republicans have Mitch McConnell to blame."

Some stupid people never learn. But it's probably a negotiating tactic. Take a hard stand and then if you give anything, you can claim you were trying to cooperate.

The Democrats hold most of the cards, in this deal.
They can do nothing, and let the Bush tax cuts expire.
Then, the Democrats in the Senate can pass legislation to give poor people and the middle class a tax cut, and defy the Republicans in the House to NOT pass a tax cut.

McConnell, Boehner and their cohorts will continue their obstructionism and obstreperousness because they feel that the election was stolen from them. These people exist in an alternate reality where facts don't count and fiction replaces irrefutably verifiable data. Their leader, Mitt Romney, recently blamed his substantial electoral loss on what he characterized as big “gifts” given by Obama to young voters, African-Americans and Hispanics. I didn't know that voters in the U.S. can actually be bribed.
