Actually I caught half an episode right after feeling like a doomsday prepper myself, what with actually acquiring a generator, transfer switch and an electrician within the three days after Hurricane Sandy (I'm nothing if not resourceful). Given the timing I found it and the survival tips (example: emerge 60 days from your shelter to escape your neighborhood at night under the cover of darkness walking single file to hide your numbers so as not to lose the element of surprise since the suburban neighbors by then would've gotten antsy) very interesting. What I can't figure out from the episode I saw is why a family would go to the trouble of building a safe room under their garage floor slab, secretly behind the garage door and transferring the displaced earth at night, only to have their identity, home exterior and said "secret" shelter revealed on television.

It's a great show for natural disasters and maybe if there were a nuclear holocaust. I'm not going to say that they go to the extreme because if they feel that is the best way to prepare themselves, then so be it, I can't judge them.

Anyway, you do learn some nice tips from the show. Oh and it's not really 'new' it's been on NatGeo for months now (maybe even a year).

Well of course in the winter time I keep a few weeks worth of canned food on hand, and extra cans of fuel for the vehicles and the generators.

But... how much lube should one stockpile?

Doomsday Preppers is a good show. It's interesting when they give expert opinions on what the people did right to prepare, and what they left out.

Of all the doomsday scenarios, the one which frightens me the most (and the one I think is the most likely) is a pandemic.

    spgem,

Pandemics have taken place many times. The most recent was 1918. Avian flu is only three mutations from becoming airborne.

Those people are a couple sandwiches shy of a picnic!!!
I mean I got a three week preparedness kit. Usually just for the summer ( hurricane season- last two hurricanes thought me a good lesson).
But those people are just crazy!!

Where I live, it's not unusual to get cut off from power or even road travel for a couple of weeks at a time. Not being prepared for that is just stupid.

But there have been nut cases building doomsday bunkers here and there since before i was born. When they start getting too elaborate, the neighbors get worried. Someone devoting that much of his life to stockpiling weapons might crack and start looking for an excuse to use them. Sometimes they just quietly fade away. One blew up, a couple miles down the road, in the 90's. Nobody got hurt, but the sheriff cleaned out the rest of the cache and the guy left town. Another one turned out to be an underground marijuana greenhouse, and the cops had it demolished.

Then there are the equally crazy but slightly smarter (?) nuts who think that the best way to prepare is to take notes about where other people's end of the world stash is, and just buy some assault weapons to take it away from them, if needed. I guess it's the cheaper option. icon_rolleyes.gif

Doomsday preppers are like the Noahs of today.
