Not too familiar with his work besides the stuff he did with Madge. Not really my thing art wise but in terms of his safe sex advocacy I think it's commendable.

It's funny this should come up.

The BF recently bought some Keith Haring kitchen sponges. Seriously.

They were crappy at their intended purpose and whoever is in charge of his estate's licensing ought to be shot for going too far.

well let me explain a little better
As men, as humans, we have a chance to be something more then what we are born with. Art, music, dance, theater ,,,,,,these are not endeavors that we take because we make lots of money at them. They are something we are born with, it happens and it seems to happen more with some men than others. We don't belittle them or make them feel less than whole for being straight. They just don't have something that we do.
Keith was extraordinary We get to be better men because of him.
and because of Gore Vidal, may he rest in peace, and Tony Kushner, and Paul Monett.
and if you don't know these men then you really need to open a book.

    LOL...wow blast from the past.

When I was an RA in college back in 1994, I used these exact characters to put students' names on their doors to their dorm rooms. Yeah, I cut out 80 of them.

I saw the retrospective of his early years that traveled the country two years ago. Amazing. I think most only know him for his most popular, mass-marketed images and concepts. He actually had a lot of other work that was far more conceptual and complex. But he took the whole Warholian pop culture as art and turned into acts of promotion, commerce and public domain. I watched a great documentary about him on ...hmmm I think it was HBO On Demand last summer that got into his process. Just brilliant.

I don't collect his work though. I surely can't afford it, lol.

Great artists die as unknowns all the time, and artists become famous for bad art. This guy painted stick figures and became famous for it. Great cause, but bad art. I can paint my own stick men.

This kind of stuff is just gross and NOT in line with Haring's populist approach to art.

Some of you guys who are dismissive of his art need to consider watching the documentary on his life that came out a few years ago. It was on Netflix streaming last I checked.

Exceptional guy and God bless us all if we can squeeze even half the life he got out of his.

Yes. I've been wracking my brain trying to remember the title so I could Google it and link it. It was AMAZING. The part where he literally paints himself into the corner made me laugh.

Yeah, but can you get anyone to pay for them? Anytime someone says "bad art" about someone who had worked that is collected in museums around the world I have to wonder what sort of amazing works they are hiding in their studio.
