Got hit by a car...

So I was biking home today, and some moron decided paying attention is for chumps. Luckily I disagree. Managed to get my leg out of the way and brace, so besides a few scrapes from taking on the pavement, I'm fine. My bike? Not so much.

The rear brake caliper and disc are shot, and the whole rear strut is bent so much the tire won't spin. Surprisingly, the tire itself and drivetrain are fine.

Now, I'm a student. I barely have funds to eat. School is too far to walk, and I can't afford to park. Any suggestions on how to get my only mode of transportation up and running again? Just for a week or two until school is done for the semester, or something more permanent for the new year.

And no, I didn't catch his license plate. I was too busy taking stock of myself while he took off.

By strut do you mean one of the seat stays? For one week you might be able to straighten it enough to free the wheel, provided it's not carbon fiber. The frame may likely be shot, and your wheel alignment will be off, but for a couple of weeks you could live with it. See a bike shop if you can, they would know about reshaping the tube.

I don't know why the disc brake isn't functioning, so can't suggest any repair. Again, a bike shop could tell you if it's a goner, or reasonably repairable, at least temporarily.

Do you have a local bike shop that you've befriended? A lot of the guys that work in the shop, at least that I've experienced, are generally pretty helpful and compassionate to people's biker woes. They may be willing to help you out or suggestions on how you can get your bike fixed cheaply.

I'd take your bike in and share your sob story. Tell them you can't pay a lot and ask them if they have suggestions on how you can get it fixed.

I'm glad you're ok! This kind of stuff is why I switched to mountain biking; though today I almost had a head-on with another bike on a trail. icon_lol.gif

Sounds like your frame is fucked. A bike shop might be able to bend it enough to make it slightly usable; but don't hold your breath.

The disc and caliper can be replaced, usually for not much money.

If you use your bike as transportation, I'd suggest buying a yard sale el cheapo to get around until you can save up enough to buy a new frame and components.

Everyone's already suggested the two or three things I could think of. When this happened to me my frame was completely shot and I found a functional bike on Craigslist really cheaply. Best of luck and I'm glad that you're okay.

Ask your friend to take you to garage sales? A lot of people are just trying to get things that they don't use. Try online as well, like your local sites that sell stuff. Sorry to hear you got hit by a car! Glad you're okay!

Glad you're okay, and sorry about your bike. I would make some attempt to locate any witnesses in case someone can give you a license plate. If I saw someone get hit I would definitely try to help ID the perpetrator. Maybe you can post something on craigslist to try to find the driver?
