I think the first thing that would come to mind would be to direct her to the economical difference between the two candidates. Since she's elderly, i'd say that would be of primary importance in her everyday life. I would point out that McSame keeps repeating that Obama is going to raise taxes, when in fact they will be lowered for about 90 percent of Americans. I'd have the facts in front of me to compare both tax plans so there couldn't be an arguement that the bush/McSame plan favors the rich. I would also point out that under Obama's plan big oil taxes would go up, and that the big oil subsidies would end with the money going to help the poor with heating costs and other programs. McSame would continue to funnel money to big oil, and the elderly and poor would be on their own unless congress came through with a program. Then I'd go onto the subject of McSames war mongering same as bush which would squander billions more which is needed here at home. I'd also explain the relationship between this unecessarry war and the price of a barrel of oil, the resulting fallen value of the dollar worldwide that in the long run is why costs of everything from gas to food is going up. I would also point out the relationship between the republicans refusal to regulate the speculators in our markets that have further increased prices for no good reason. Finally I would dispel a lot of the lies McSame/Palin are telling about where Obama/Biden are on the issues, and about things like Obama being a muslim and the like. I'd have copies of the verifyable truth from the net, to back up everything you say. GOOD LUCK !!!!!!!!

If she answers the following questions yes, then she should vote for McCain:

    1. Do you believe that Roe vs Wade should be overturned, and that abortion rights should be decided state by state

    2. Do you believe that no federal protection from hate crimes should be offered to gays

    3. Do you believe that the federal government should ban or prevent recognition of same sex marriages

    4. Do you believe that the surge in Iraq is working, and that the best solution for our security in the US is to continue to occupy Iraq

    5. Do you believe that the federal goverment should not offer universal health care, but should rely on expansions of the current systems and the free market

    6. Do you believe that the current tax and spending structure is basically right, and that we should continue to reduce taxes / maintain the reductions and reduce the deficit by reducing spending, keeping in mind that defense and social security and interest are 2/3 or the budget, so cuts will have to be steep on other programs

    7. Do you believe that Sarah Palin is qualified to take over as president

    8. Do you believe that we should maintain NATFA and other "free trade" agreements

To me, these are the basic issues that separate McCain and Obama. If someone answers yes to all of the above, then McCain is obviously who they should pick.

I don't think Obama would agree with any of those. Some might have complex answers, but none would be "yes"

Hence why I used the word democrat instead of his name. For one I think we all know where NAFTA came from. Enough democrats also supports or have supported many of those points as well.

Btw: I'd glad you put the points as just reasons for voting instead of presenting them as "bad" or "wrong". To each his/her own. Many Americans do consider much of the above to be primary reasons for voting McCain.

Easy, a vote for McCain is a vote for endless war abroad and poverty here at home.

OR, when that notorious 3 in the morning phone call comes, do you want a 72 year old, hot-tempered old guy, high on Ambien(tm) picking it up? Not a pretty thought.

There simply is NO logical reason to vote for NObama, so talking 'sense' to her won't persuade her.
If you can get her to become a mind-numb automaton, then words like "hope" and "change" will hook her. Also, add LOTS of liberal white guilt.
The Rev Martin Luther King Jr. was a Republican- I bet he'd vote for McCain, if only for the simple reason that NObama is being judged SOLELY by the color of his skin (Geraldine Ferraro is RIGHT!)- because Barry Hussein NObama has no character, OR experience! Palin would be a much more experienced Executive- she has actually RUN something! Barry has only run the Harvard Law Review; but then, haven't most blue collar Joe's?
    NO WAY, NO HOW, NOBAMA!

Have her read over Obama's & McCain's websites, then check out the Demoratic & Republican platforms.
If that doesn't work, put her out of her misery

Anyone who would vote for McCain is stupid.
    McCain hates Gays.
    McCain wants to perpetuate poverty.
McCain wants to rob women of their right to choose.
McCain will stay in Iraq for 100 years.
McCain is over the hill and will die soon.

    ========= TRANSLATION INTO REPUBLICAN ===============

Anyone who would vote for Obama is Stupid.
Obama doesn't respect the sanctity of Marriage.
Obama wants to penalize people for being successful
Obama wants to Rob unborn children of their right to life.
Obama wants to Cut and Run before the job is done.
Obama is an inexperienced 'community organizer'.

All of it is b.s. Unfortunately, the real issues that lie behind these statements are a little more complicated and require a little more thoughtfulness than it seems a lot of people are capable of, and that doesn't just mean Republicans.

Ask her why she wants to vote for McCain and then try to get her to understand why you see those issues differently. Maybe she'll get a new perspective and change her mind. Or maybe, just maybe, she has different views and beliefs and McCain is actually the right candidate for her.

Biggest plus for the Obama argument as I see it right now - Sarah Palin. But thats cuz i hate the bitch, maybe your Mother-in-law likes her. In which case she is stupid!

I'm not voting for Obama because he is completely unqualified, he's a DAMN socialist, he's a "...my muslim, I mean Christian faith.." (ok yeah you don't studder on your religious beliefs), he is clearly bitter towards the white race, and he offers this vague change to the U.S.... Sorry but I don't understand why you feel that actually living up to and fulfilling the American dream is such a crime. Go to Russia or some other worthless country oversees, NOBAMA!

Your mother-in-law sounds reasonable enough. Maybe she prefers McCain because she is disturbed about Barrack Hussein Obama's friends (including Tony Rezko - who went straight to jail on corruption charges; or bomb thrower Bill Ayers; or the good Reverend Wright) who g-- damned the U.S. and white people for years - with Obama sitting there in the pulpit claiming he heard nothing wrong - meanwhile he gave over $20,000.00 to that church - later claiming his own mother had no money to pay for cancer treatments.

Maybe your mother-in-law is a smart lady - who knows McCain will do everything he can to try to prevent another 9/11; prefers to attack radical Islam on their territory instead of ours; knows we need to open ANWAR so we won't continue to be dependent on oil from the Saudis, Venezuela and Iran.

I wonder if your mother-in-law is disgusted with the libs and their hate filled rhetoric about McCain's vice presidential nominee? I hear lots of women feel that way. Gee libs, now you have Biden acting like he wants out. I wonder if Hillary is still available?

I love how Obama gets racists riled up. It is like turning on the light and watching the roaches scatter. But most importantly he is a good, intelligent man who loves the Constitution and all that it stands for.

I mean, c'mon -- for real? Doesn't every reasonably informed person now know that Sadam was not a supporter of radical Islam? Don't you know that the war on Iraq diverted resources from the war in Afghanistan -- the REAL war against radical terrorist Islam -- which may cost us our victory there?

I mean...really. Aren't you embarrassed to write stuff like that?

Squarejaw, if we had a dollar for every time you came on and tried to correct somebody, or complain about some point - we'd have - well, you tell us, maybe you can count. You'd complain about the dollar amount I might name. I'd like to see you complain and find fault just a little bit less. Your being contrary with so many posters is becoming very tiresome.
