your heart doesn't pump that strongly to keep the blood flowing thoroughly while sitting for long periods of time therefore you need to stand up once and a while to keep from getting an aneurysm in your brain.

I set up a standing desk in my cube. I spend half my workday standing and the rest sitting. When I am sitting I try to get up once an hr. I drink a lot of water so I get up for lots of potty trips.

The chances of someone developing a clot in the leg from immobility is related to a weak heart. In other words, heart attacks, valve leaks, age, etc. those are usually the primary causes for someone to get a clot because the pumping mechanism is considerably as weak as the heart.
