yes yes yes!!!! I can tell already I'm going to love this thread haha. Scanned some of the artists you guys mentioned - man is it nice to see someone else mention James Vincent McMorrow, Monsters and Men, Ben Howard, Black Keys, mumford and sons, etc.

For those that mentioned the latter (mumford) - look up The Avett Brothers- moreso verging on folk, but they're great. Specifically "i would be sad", "living of love" "all my mistakes".

Also, IMAGINE DRAGONS! It makes me sad that nobody's brought em' up yet. Look up "Radioactive", "Demons", "Nothing left to say", "Amsterdam"-- I can go on and on. So, so so soooooooo good

Ahh the Faint is brilliant! Saddle Creek just reissued Danse Macabe for its 10th anniversary. I can't believe that record has been out that long. YYY's are releasing a new album in 2013 and the gossip is amazing live. Beth Ditto is the shit.

Not to nitpick but I don't consider Florence, mumford, nor Imagine Dragons to be indie... They are pretty popular and in the mainstream.

Florence and Mumford are also now both part of the Universal Music Group, something that will keep them from being on the Indie charts.

A little bit of history about "Indie" as a genre. Although, as already mentioned here, some refer to it as musicians who release music without the help or distribution of a label, the term "Indie" started being used in the late 70's and the 80's to mostly describe music being released on independent labels like Beggars Banquet, 4AD, Rough Trade, Mute, Factory, Nettwerk, SubPop, and Wax Trax. The music styles varied but did not usually fit into what was being played on the radio or was on the mainstream charts. Back then many of these labels did little more than press the vinyl and distribute it for the band. Getting into a studio and recording music, the production, promotion, and planning a tour and getting into venues was mostly left up to the band.
My favorite of any independent label is 4AD. Back in my days of youth the label was bringing acts like This Mortal Coil, Cocteau Twins, Lush, Wolfgang Press, Clan of Xymox, Colourbox, Dead Can Dance, Throwing Muses, and The Pixies. Today they distribute Grimes, Purity Ring, St Vincent, Twin Shadow, The Big Pink, Efterklang, and Camera Obscura. They've been responsible for bringing the world the best music for more than 30 years.

Great song from a 4AD band in the 90's

    mind..blown.. at all... the... artists..

I just looked up Cold War Kids, hot damn is "Hang Me Up To Dry" and "We Used To Vacation" good! They're stuck on repeat.

Imagine Dragon's been picking up steam lately, yeah, they're slowly falling out of that indie label and making their way to mainstream-ish --- hey, all good for me, they deserve it.

On that topic- they're coming back to Vancouver in a few months -- tickets baaaaaaaaaught! Hells Yes.

    PS: The Strokes are FANTASTIC.
check out Heartless Bastards - specifically, "Hold Your Head High", "Sway" and "Only For You"

    Kate Bush
    Fiest
    Regina Specktor
    Ingrid Michealson
    The Weepies

None of them are rock per say but they are Indie and I don't know how to categorize their music.
