Just showing some love for the 305!!!! Loving my new hometown right now. And while yes, I know some of the pics are of Miami Beach instead of mainland Miami, most locals and visitors make no big distinction between the two. One wouldn't exist without the other.

Yes it's hot in Miami. What do you expect. Yes, it's a majority Latin city. Yes, it's by the beach.

So don't move here if you don't like any of the above. If 4 seasons are your thing and you hate spics, move to Buffalo.

We may not be as exciting as some places (like Buffalo) but we sure know how to have a good time!!!!icon_cool.gif

    DALE!!!!

Well, if you're going to do yet another thread about Miami I might as well repost this:

As a Miami native I can assure you that the extremes of tourist areas and urban blight that everyone is so familiar with do not properly represent Miami. I grew up in the Greater Miami Area just south of the city and Miami Beach, where minimal lot sizes are two acres and the scenery the most beautiful in Florida excepting perhaps Palm Beach. Here are a few pictures of that Miami which most non-natives never imagined existed:

Everyone knows what a ficus tree is, but have usually only seen them tossed half-dead on the curb in their pots. Here's how they look in full maturity - these banyan trees were planted in 1919 and line Old Cutler Road, a great place to be stuck in traffic:
    2l8hjfb.jpg

    33ufm9e.jpg

Miami's not all at sea level - here's a beautiful stretch of canal, quarried out of coral rock, in Coral Gables east of The Biltmore Hotel:
    5ww2g9.jpg

Looks like the South Pacific, doesn't it? Here's where I learned to swim, at Matheson Hammock, a man-made atoll, at a time when my dark suntanned skin made me so rare and exotic that beachgoers would approach my mother to ask her if my father was Cuban. This photo faces south towards miles of natural, undeveloped coastline:
    ji25ja.jpg

    kbotw6.jpg

And this aerial photo shows the developed coastline north of Matheson Hammock - the Miami most of you know, that unbridled waterfront development stretching non-stop north to Fort Lauderdale, Boca and beyond.
    zl2882.jpg

    Vintage postcard:
    qso66o.jpg

Where egret fly: miles of protected undeveloped shoreline beginning south of Matheson Hammock and Coral Gables in Pinecrest and Palmetto Bay; I took this photo facing northeast, and you can make out the white concrete condos on Key Biscayne as a thin white line on the horizon to the far right, with nearer pink condos in the Gables area far beyond the mangroves in the center, and the Royal Palms you see on the far left beyond the masts are on the property of The Deering Estate. At sunset flocks of white egret swoop low to nest in the mangroves at water's edge, so many that even though you can't tell in the photo, in person even at that distance I could see so many flecks of white amongst the green that I couldn't help but be reminded of gardenia bushes:
    d722g.jpg

Same spot looking south at Palmetto Bay and the ocean; when I took my Cuban immigrant friend here he said it was so rural it reminded him of Cuba:
    x0oh87.jpg

Most of you know about Vizcaya, but here's two views of The Deering Estate in Palmetto Bay, built in the twenties:
    rt3ndh.jpg

    2wltxro.jpg

Also on the waterfront is The Barnacle in Coconut Grove; built in 1891, this Victorian home predates even Vizcaya:
    27xmoag.jpg

Plymouth Congregational Church in Coconut Grove, built in 1918:
    1059x88.jpg

    b3pkwz.jpg

Finally, farther south way off the beaten path and not in the best neighborhood (Homestead) here's Coral Castle, carved in the twenties by hand out of native Florida Coral by a Latvian immigrant in homage to his 16 year old fiancee who jilted him right before their wedding:
    dduns.jpg

So you see, it's not all South Beach and Liberty City!

I'm from Florida too and I always find it hilarious when northerners are so in awe of how hot it is in December. I love my state though. You shouldn't really take in the whole state. Its a great place to live. Sure its hot and flat but its also like three states in one. I have so many memories of riding out hurricane Charlie and Bonnie with a hurricane party. Being embarassed during the 2000 elections. And wearing shorts in mid January.

Lol we blow all other states out of the water. Which is kind of funny considering that unless you live on the panhandle Florida is pretty much an island.

Since you started the thread, I'll ask....

I'm considering Miami Beach for my B'day trip next October. Or possibly in combination with Key West. I'm planning 8-10 nights, so maybe 4-5 nights MB and then 4-5 nights in KW. Or maybe all in one place or the other; I'm just in the thinking about it stage so it's all very much up in the air.

Does anyone have any recommendations for places to stay? I want someplace decent, on or very close to the beach(Sungod, remember?), with access to a good gym-either in the hotel or nearby, and preferably with spa facilities.

I'm not much of a drinker, and I'm not into clubbing so night life is not a priority to me. Usually on vacay I go walking/shopping/galleries/museums in the evenings after dinner.

I've looked through some of the forums. I'm not interested in someplace all-male/clothing optional at this point i.e Island House etc.

I'm budgeting ~$200-$250/night for the hotel, maybe a little more for the right place- I'm only turning 50 once!

I'd appreciate any input from any of you guys in the area, or any of you who have visited there. Email me if you prefer.

    Thanks!

    Peace.

    Mike

Hey Mike - Oct is a great time to get a bang for that $250 as it is the slowest month of the year down there. I used to go to FL a ton for work (FLL, MIA, TPA, a little RSW and a tad MCO) and still go every March for a week and a half (Art Deco knows as we met a couple times for meals/drinks) and my opinion is I prefer what is mid beach in the 16s (north of Loews Hotel) to 21st (Collins Park). Actually I can say I first started staying around Collins Park area in 1996 and most of the time since - pre-gentrified period (PGP) for sure until last 7 or 8 years. I still recall the homeless camping out in that area before it became the focus of whats now called Arte City. That area gets you away from the crowds and noise of SoBe proper yet walking distance from Lincoln Road Mall and a quick cab ride from the heart of Ocean Ave. I think B South Beach is now finished renovations (former Riande Continental)? Check their website. I think $250 in Oct should get you a good room there. In Miami Beach there really are only three gaybars - Twist (most popular) and Score (lots of Europens and trance music) and the one off Lincoln Road Mall on Michigan - I think it changed its name from when I went there right after it opened IF it is open anymore. If I recall they had a sister club in DC. Oct will be slow - in fact I was SHOCKED at how dead even Twist was in mid March - even Fri/Sat - for the past few years - I guess recession bears its meth teeth even in gay resorts! My first time in Miami Beach Mike was Oct 1995 for a business conference but I recall it was overcast and windy and rainy those four days (I hardly remember seeing the sun) so clothe appropriately for that possibility. JM85 thanks for the pics - I love SoFLA!!

The one time I stayed at one of those hotels on Collins Ave., I saw a woman in a string bikini climb down off one of those yachts across the street with an empty measuring cup. She bounced over to the next yacht, and after a moment, came back with a heaping cup-full of white powder material.

I suppose she could have been making biscuits...

Never been to Miami, but I have been to Key West... What a wonderfully quickly little island! I LOVE FL!

However I don't think in can relocate to FL, I love snow and winter too much to leave NJ.

¡Mira! Miami is more than just big box skyscrapers and barren urban wasteland! I wonder if Buffalo can claim the big name designers like Miami???
