I witnessed the oddest thing today...

...while out shopping. I put this here, didn't know what other forum fits. Shouldn't a gay site have a shopping forum, for heaven's sake? icon_rolleyes.gif

Anyway, I was in a mall, when this phalanx of about 10 black-suited men & women swept by, all wearing ID badges that alternately said "Executive Security" or "VIP Security".

And in the middle of this mob was a young man and woman. I didn't recognize them. Nor did anybody else, to my observation.

And I thought: Why does this couple, that nobody seems to recognize, need all this protection? And isn't this the stupidest way to shop? How can they actually look at anything in the middle of this gaggle? Why not just go anonymous, with security bodyguards hanging back in reserve, ready to move in should a problem develop?

Have any of you seen something like this before? I'm acquainted with people who have personal bodyguards (nor for me, of course), but not this mob scene I witnessed. Was this a superstar like Madonna that I didn't recognize? icon_question.gif

Amazing! But these people didn't have any paparazzi with them, just security.

That explains the mall location. If they were promoting some fragrance instead of shopping that'd explain the security without the paparazzi, who wouldn't be interested in giving their products free publicity for the umpteenth time.

I dunno, it was just the Fort Lauderdale Galleria, nothing special. They were coming from the direction of Macy's, but I saw no event promotions there.

Celebrities would go up to the Palm Beach malls, not the grungy Galleria. Or maybe the Aventura Mall to the south, about 5 times bigger. I remain puzzled by what I witnessed.

Maybe you just couldn't see them yet? Maybe they staged a sequence of events ending with the Paparazzi popping out and taking photos and chasing them around?

I suppose anything is possible. We were more interested in seeing what Macy's had, when this entourage swept by. Unless the media reports it I'll never know. And if they don't I'll assume it was a non-event.

I had seen something similar once, back when I was 18.

It was Joan Collins (or her doppelganger) and a male friend...shopping in Maple Ridge (a suburb of Vancouver) of all places. I did a double take, just to make sure.

And were they surrounded by security, or some other kind of entourage?

Actually, the people that were with her, were more dispersed...as it seemed her "date" looked like he could take care of a situation, if one arose.

Some people like to feel important. They have the money to spend on bodyguards. Those are jobs which they are creating. Wonderful. I hope the bodyguards are getting benefits.

There's megayacht dockage south off 17th St at Pier 66 & across at the Hilton as well as Bahia Mar and the city docks at Las Olas and again at Sunrise Harbor, catty-corner to the Gallaria, so maybe someone ran out of underwear and made a quick run to the mall.

    home2.jpg

Largest I've seen there (at the Hilton) was Limitless. Gorgeous boat. It makes those 100-footers shown above look cramped for space.

    Woof!

Though I see Octopus was there recently. Looks like it was only able to get in as far as the port.

    1163444.jpg
Oh look, the helicopter has its own garage.

I would image that some of these people must have body guards when out in public. That's just huge money.

As to Palm Beach malls? Worth Avenue is not a mall. Malls are for the 90%. Or that 1% just off the boat and in need of emergency underwear.

happens all the time in dc. usually foreign head of state or someone important. i can never recognize who they are but you'll see a bunch of guys in suits with ear pieces. the funniest one i ever saw was in the mall. i was looking for a new tie. noticed all the security in the store but didn't think too much of it until i almost knocked colin powell over. this was back when he was secretary of state. i just said "sorry" and he laughed. didn't realize he was so short.

Yes, last summer, two of those mega-yachts came up the Columbia, which is very, very unusual. One of them stopped in our town and some people got off with a security detail like that and got into limos to go... somewhere. Nobody has a clue who it was. According to ship-finder, the yachts went all the way up to Lewiston, Idaho and stayed for a few weeks.

As best I can figure, some hoi polloi were going big game hunting in the rockies with all the comforts of home.

I am happy to report that I had a navigational conflict with one of those tubs, and since I was under sail and he was not restricted, I made him go the fuck around me.

Oh, yeah, I've seen it in D.C. too. One time it was Corazon Aquino.

Have never seen the Columbia but I follow some Coast Guard stuff (mom was communications officer in Aux) and so I've seen vids of the Coast Guard training at the mouth of the river. Very exciting. I understand also that to transit out to sea, boats wait together for the slack tide to rush out before all hell breaks loose. That's gotta be fun.

As to your claims of right of way, that depends on the situation. Sail normally gets it over power but for basically two things: one being his maneuverability (right of way actually goes not automatically to sail but to the vessel which has least maneuverability for any various reasons) so it could be he had a draft too deep to leave the channel which might have put you at fault. But also, it has to do with your survivability. They might have been having cocktails and not seen ya. We'd've had to rechristen your vessel the PT109.

I recall a similar incident from decades ago that was really eye opening for me.

I was about 13 and decided to accompany my parents and brother to Buffalo NY (from Toronto) on a day trip because I had never been to the States before. We were at the Buffalo airport seeing my brother off to LA (mid-70's so hardly any security issues back then) when all of sudden a phalanx of security types approached. Everyone moved to the sides as a man holding what looked like a glass hat box with a red cushion inside it strode forth. Sparkling light came from the cushion as if it was covered in glass bits and I swear the first thing I thought of was Cinderella's glass slipper!

Following about 10 feet behind the man with the glass box was a figure who looked like an overweight Prince Charming, complete with ivory cape (!!). Being Canadian I expected royalty but he clearly wasn't the Queen or Prince Phillip or anyone else I recognized. My confusion became absolute when suddenly EVERYONE (but me) starting politely clapping, including my parents.

The obviously famous figure proceeded to make a series a sweeping bows as he flowed along, graciously smiling and thanking everyone. Perplexed I asked my mother who he was and she answered "Liberace! ... and did you see the rings in that box!"...

Never in a million years would I have expected Americans to treat someone as if they were royalty. I was already shocked that day to discover what an inner city in America looked like (we got lost in Buffalo, and coming from Toronto it was an eye opener for sure!) and so the episode with Liberace really confused me. It was the first time I had ever seen my parents (or anyone else for that matter) react to an obviously homosexual man with respect and even admiration.
