I'm getting lots of emails from many people on here concerned about my saftey. I'll take care of them in one fell swoop here.

The hurricane has passed, it's north of the city now, down to a tropical storm. I consider myself very lucky...my area is one of the very, very few that still has power. At no point during the hurricane did my power go out. I also have cellular service, most cellular providers are down.

It was the scariest thing I've ever experienced, not something I will ever repeat again. Anyone who's been through a hurricane knows just how amazing, fantastic, scary, terrifying, and bizarre it is. My apartment is south facing, so I didn't have any direct wind hitting me, thankfully. Hard to say if my windows would have held up. I'm in an old building and the windows are thin, single paned.

I didn't start getting nervous until the first tropical stormwinds hit around 1am. The worst part for my area started around 4am, my heart was pounding, and there was no way I'd be able to sleep. I watched as the explosions from transformers lighting the sky made their way closer and closer. The houses across the street lost power around 5am or so, then eventually the area to the west of my complex lost power. I don't know why my power stayed on, but I'm not conplaining! Once the area to the west of me lost power, it was so dark and lifeless, I truly felt isolated, like I was the only person in the world. It was unnerving, so much so, that I felt the best thing I could do was to go to sleep. It wasn't a nice feeling.

I made a makeshift bed in my hallway and slept about 5 hours. I woke up to weak wind and rain, and I've spent the entire time watching the news seeing amazing pictures and videos of the destruction. I walked around my complex taking a few pictures of the damage (which is pretty minor). Mostly small to mid-sized tree branches strewn across the ground.

So I have power and ccellualr service but no running water. I'm going to do my best to get to Austin tonight or tomorrow and spend a few days there until things get back to normal (officials are estimating that some people will be without power for up to 18 days).

This is the inner courtyard of my building.

In this pic these trees aren't supposed to hang this low. They're resting on the power lines.

Glad you're all right, man . . . crazy that you didn't lose power.

Is this the first one you've been through? I don't remember hearing of them going to Texas too often.

Glad you're OK, and thanx for the pix. Sending you private email, cause those apts look familiar, used to live in Houston with my late partner.

    Yep, it's my first...and last!

Because of the serious flooding in parts of the city, officials decided to extend the curfew from the mandatory evac areas to the entire city. I have no running water, I'm about 10 miles from the closest shelter, and there's no plans for water and ice distribution centres yet, so I'm leaving the city today, heading to Austin.

Hope this finds you safe and sound . . . I ran from home back to New Orleans not too long after Gustav passed, too.

Checked your profile and saw you're new to Texas . . . so . . . welcome to the Gulf coast, eh?

Glad that you made it through alright. Not like Thunder Bay or Toronto I bet! Wow you still have power that is amazing. I wonder how Kinetic made out.

He's fine. He was hoping to fly out yesterday but the airports were still closed. Maybe he'll be able to catch a flight today.
