Since everyone no longer gets drafted into military service, the vast majority of our population is removed from any sort of public obligation and paying taxes is our only way of really expressing our citizenship, which only about 50 percent of Americans do anymore, so the real answer is everyone should pay something, even the poorest people should have to pay something, even 10 dollars.
The middle class, that is, the majority of Americans will have to pay more too and the rich should be paying upwards of 50 percent, we have 2 wars that were put on credit cards and those debts are coming due. The idea that any single person in this country somehow gets wealthy all on their own, without the infrastructure and safety that this nation provides is selfish and insane. The debt and obligations are real and it's past time to begin to seriously pay them back.

    Yes. That's probably very true.

Also, corporations need to pay a lot more, get rid of the loop holes, carried interest and capital gains, and add the financial transaction tax.

We also need to cut back excessive defense spending, bring all our troops home from the Middle East and other international locales and cut out all this costly nation building and focus on domestic problems in the US. That will help greatly reduce our budget deficit. Also end all the Bush era tax cuts for the wealthy.
