SportRock is fun. I've climbed there several times. So I would be interested. It's not really all that walkable from the Metro though.

It looks like its only a few blocks away on Eisenhower. What's so "not really walkable" about it?

Sorry, my mistake. I was thinking of a different place. I just confirmed that it is a short 3-4 minute walk.

I'll be there; should be a good time. It's been a long time since I climbed.

I've never climbed before. Would this be doable or would I be holding everyone back in the Kiddie section while everyone else climbs on the Big Boy Rocks?

OneEightZero, don't worry about that! You should still come. You won't be able to belay (or, as Caslon calls it, "hold the other end of the rope"). But that's no problem.

I've never done it before either. It can't be that hard or they wouldn't be able to run a business. It looks like grabbing and stepping on little plastic bumps on a wall. Probably figuring out a path to the top is the hardest part. I'm sure we can do it.

    Uhhhhhhhhh, you'd be surprised.

But luckily they have lots of different classes of wall, some for the more experienced climbers and others for less experienced ones.

Oh good! I expect there's some challenge to it. I'm sure there is. I'll find my level of wall and have at it. :-) I just meant it can't be designed so only the fittest or something like that can use it or they couldn't stay in business.

    Kiddie Wall!!!!

    LOL

They have an Alphabet Wall at Lifetime where I work out that is for kids I assume. Maybe I should try it and get some mad skillz before going to Sportrock! icon_biggrin.gif

I'm in. Got it locked in my google calendar. icon_smile.gif Let me know if you guys want to meet up there before 1/19 to get some climbs in, or to learn to be a belayer. I can get the $4-off buddy discount for everyone with my Sportrock membership.

It looks like we have about 4 experienced belayers going so far who can pair up and "hold the rope" for a few other climbers. (and yep, there are beginner-rated climbing routes at Sportrock, 5.5 rating and up on both short walls towards the back kinda out of sight, and long/tall walls in the front).

Experienced climbers coming so far (those that have tried out climbing before):
FlyGuyAFga (climbed for about a year)
GWriter (climbed for a few months)
    Chewey_Delt (climbed a while back)
    OneEightZero (Start-up climber)

I'd probably be down for going at least once before we all meet up. It's been a really long time, so I'd like to get a little belaying refresher.

Awesome! I'm looking forward to meeting up with you and hearing about your AT hike. I'm back in town on Thursday. -Aron

I would like to come to an earlier climb, too.

Flyguy, have you ever met a guy named Ivan there? He's about your height and age. He says he goes there about 4 or 5 times a week.

Sure, I'm up for meeting up to get in some climbing practice before our group 1/19 meetup. Name you're date, and I'll lock it in my schedule. I might have seen your bud Ivan in there (nice name, too), they have very steady regulars that I see all the time there. Great sport with great camaraderie. It's even kind of nurturing and encouraging, as belayers are the "eyes" of the person on the wall, and often give their climber tips, aka "beta," on how to make it to the top.
For shorties/lightweights like me, we have some advantages in this sport, and taller people also have their own advantages of reaching more hand-holds and foot-holds than us shorties.
I'll be glad to meetup anytime. Climbing is one hella good, full-body workout without the usual drudgery of traditional gyms (and the occasional shirtless guys clinging to the walls makes for nice motivational scenery to frequent the gym there, too). You know it's gotta be a gay-friendly sport if it's a requirement to keep your eyes glued on your climbers backside as you're belaying them icon_smile.gif

I don't know how much time is needed for such an activity. So I defer to the experienced participants to say if 2 is good or suggest another time.

But otherwise, 2 is good for me. I'm easy and flexible, as I've oft been told.

Both 12/29 at 2pm is good, plus the 1/19 day, works for me. A typical climbing afternoon will last about 2 hours. Sometimes we've made an entire day of it, resting, snacking, and chatting between climbs.

(Outdoor climbs can last all day, too, especially since setting it up takes a while and equipment is shared with other climbers there, so when you bring your own lunch, it becomes kind of a small picnic day, too.)
