As a matter of pure convenience, having traits that fall somewhere between what the majority possesses and the society idealizes would make life a lot easier. First, when you look like the majority, people in general are more likely to engage you; and you are more likely to engage them. This is because you are more likely to be seen and regarded as a person (with concomitant emotions) rather than as a part of the environment (i.e., an obstacle or tool; more of an issue in big cities). With enough social exchange, you embrace the cultural and behavioral assumptions of the majority group. This makes establishing and maintaining relationship a lot faster because the chances of misunderstanding are lower. Includes everything from friendly relations to business ties.
Moreover, when you have traits that personify what is idealized by the majority, many will be willing to be extra nice to you (bend over backwards, dismiss social faux pas, exercise discretion in your favor); includes and goes beyond sexual context.
However--and a big however--a life that is "a lot easier" doesn't mean a life that is as enriching, mentally. If you float through life never having to ask yourself "why" you may be different and why this difference might sometimes result in what seems to you an arbitrary deprivation of opportunities, you are less inclined to critically analyze the status quo. And we know what has been said about the worth of an unexamined life.
