I just saw my first gay ad on American TV. For Johnny Walker scotch . Is this as startling a new phenomenon as I thought, or are these common now, and I have just missed them? Almost subliminal, only 12 seconds long. On CNBC, taped from a re-broadcast of an investment show. It was so short, I think a lot of straight men would not have picked up on the fact that it was a gay ad. Suavely dressed man on cell phone; voice over: "He could just text you back tomorrow. . .He could just call and make sure you got home alright." Man #1 sprightly coming down front steps of NYC brownstone. Man #2 driving in rain. Next day, man #2 walking down street of brownstones, with bouncing step and a bottle under his arm. Indoors, Man #1, wearing very big smile, pulls bottle of Johnnie Walker out of its box, in the hand of Man #2, while man #2 affectionately pats Man #1 on his sweatered shoulder. "And you could just give him a pitching wedge this year." Maybe they are just supposed to be old frat buddies.
