One of my goals for 2013 is to earn a personal training certification to make some extra cash on the side and for my own benefit in general fitness education. I've narrowed it down to either NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) or NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association).

Does anyone have or know someone that has a personal training cert from either of those orgs? What was the exam like and how did you/they go about preparing for it?

NSCA... all the way.For my money the NSCA and the ACSM are the best in the world.
I go to a lot of the stuff that the NSCA puts on , and its always first rate.
NASM is good, but if you really want the best NSCA all the way.
Don't forget continuing education after your certified , again they offer a lot of State Clinics, webinars etc.
