So... most years I wind up going out to a bar or club to bring the New Year in with a BANG! But, sometimes, I play it "low-key" and do something simple and seemingly understand (but still manage to have a GREAT time)

This year I have a great friend from college coming home for the holiday's from gay Paris. There will be a small group of us bringing in the New Year at friends place and then going climbing the following day. I think it will be great fun and a nice change from the usual.

So what are your plans for the New Year?

I've never been big on New Year's celebrations.

My mother used to love going out, New Year's Eve.
She'd always bring home paper hats and noise makers, that we'd find when we got up, the next morning.

Restaurants and bistros in and around San Francisco on New Year's Eve are best left for the folks from Pitchfork or Hoe-handle Iowa. These tourists come to town for the time of their lives and our restaurants and bistros are stressed trying to handle all the party revelers - with their noise makers and confetti. Menus are often changed just for the night - with standard fare - and special pricing. The restaurant staff are not happy with the extra tables they have to take care of - and the crowds make it impossible for them to do their best work. Some of these hicks stiff the staffs on tips - (they think 10% is a generous tip)- - - and generally it is not the best time of life for wait staffs. (NYE, Mother's Day, and other holidays are really NOT the times to go to restaurants here).

Most of us stay away on nights like this and if we party at all, we party at the homes of friends. Better to make NYE a quiet time with close friends, and let the folks from Iowa crowd the streets and public places. It will all return to normal for the rest of us in a few days.

Well said.... I usually get invited to several parties, may attend one, then home. Nothing too wild, I want to remember my changeover to 2013... or any other year...lol

I will most likely do some work the morning of as well. Welcome to the age of the mobile worker!! Yay! icon_rolleyes.gif

Mostly just modifying policy and procedure manuals for roll-out. I am not paid hourly though, so no OT for me icon_sad.gif.

Bunch of us hang out at a friend's huge home, have dinner, cocktails and play Just Dance on Wii until the ball drops. We like to keep it low key and avoid driving on the roads.

I get what you guys mean. I do like to go out on New Year's Eve, but it is more difficult to do if you don't plan ahead. But at the same time, sometimes the lack of planning can lead to an unexpected good time. It's definitely a "roll of the dice" though.

One year we went to Niagara (Canadian side) for the New Year, but didn't set up anything with a cabbie for getting us back to our hotel. A few of our friends left for the room early and made it back fine. 3 of us guys and 1 girl decided to stay and party a bit more. At the end of the night, we couldn't find a cab... even at 5 am it was impossible to get a cab.

We wound up walking around for about 30 mins looking for a cab. We ran into so many random people. We even started a dance off with another group in the middle of the road using the music that was spilling onto the streets from the closet bar for a beat. The cops broke us up because we were blocking traffic, but it was a solid 5 mins of fun.

So we eventually decided to whore out the girl to find a ride home. Us three guys hid while the girl stood on the street trying to flag down a car.

Two cars stopped pretty quick, but didn't have room for the four of us. The third car to stop wound up being a guy driving by himself. Our friend asked the guy for a ride for all us and when he said, "Yes." The girl waved for us guys to hop into the car. We rushed the car and hopped in before the guy could process what had happened.

You could see from the guys face he was expecting to be riding back with a car full of sexy ladies. We talked to the guy and found out he was actually on his way to his girlfriend's (which made me feel better about our deceit). He had just left work and was planning to spend the rest of the day with her.

Anyways, he got us to our hotel safe and we threw him a 20 for his troubles. But this is why I like to go out on nights like this because I often find myself in these random situations.

LOL! "Tradition" is overrated! I very clearly remember the first time I heard my g-ma curse. We were all watching the movie Boyz N The Hood. When Ricky gets shot, you can hear my grandma saying under her breath, "That motherfucker..." about the guy who shot him. She instantly become even more of a hero to me! Too cool!icon_cool.gif
