As many know, changing up your routine often is important to maintain 'muscle confusion' and keep your workout from hitting a plateau. If you read the Men's Health magazines, you probably know that each issue has a new workout routine for the month, differing from the previous.

Has anyone ever followed just those workout routines and seen great results? Or are you only happy with the routine if you make some slight changes?

I did. I think the magazine was "Men's Fitness." I still have a notebook of clippings of those, and I switch things up from time to time. Usually depending on the season and what sport or other exercise I'm doing.

Of course, the whole point to some of those magazine routines was to sell the gadget of the month, and occasionally the pictures didn't match the text or there were other errors. And I suppose for liability reasons, they never specify "bench presses" - it's always "rack lockouts" and so forth.

The main issue that lead me to that was that I had been doing a bit of this and a bit of that for years, without a real program. So following any trainer-designed program was an improvement. Of course, nowadays you can probably get that for free on the interwebz.
