BMI, accurate?

    There are a ton of BMI calculators, i maintain my weight according to my height, these calculators must be for the average joe, they dont take into account some guys who have put on weight with muscle.

    What is your BMI according to this calculator?

    depending on plus or minus 5 lbs, my average BMI is 24, 24 percentile,

    if i put any more weight on with muscle, i'll be overweight?

    I'm 5'7 and 160 lbs. My BMI is 25.1. I'm overweight by 1 pound. You are correct that the calculator doesn't take into consideration muscle mass and actual body fat. In my opinion, the calculator serves as a general weight guide and doesn't dictate your overall health status.

    It also doesn't account for gender differences. In my opinion the scale should be different for men and women.

    Is there some reason you're using BMI?

    Because I haven't used it in a long, long time. I think it's a worthless measurement. Anyone who puts on even a modest amount of muscle will be "overweight".

    I'm obese on the archaic BMI scale.

    The only remotely practical purpose I can discern for the use of BMI is for a physician to show either a grossly obese or cadaverously underweight person, both who have zero knowledge of any health precepts, how their body mass proportion is substantially off for them to be healthy.

    Outside of super general scopes like that the BMI is worthless, especially so in people with any considerable hypertrophy-achieved muscle mass.

    The BMI scale states that athletes, especially weight lifters, bodybuilders and strength training athletes, will not have accurate measurement. The BMI is a statistical tool used for the average layperson, not bodybuilders or most active people. It accounts for the average, not the outliers (i.e., most of us on RealJock).

    Basically, ignore the BMI unless you are among the masses that are inactive, consume junk food daily and eat fast food.

    You hit the nail right on the head. BMI assumes no physical activity, average to no musculature. If you don't lift, or even exercise for that matter, BMI is totally in accurate. Throw it out the door.
