Advice for the new guys

So today I am at the gym and there is this guy next to me. Clearly a new guy joining the gym. He had his brand new bag and shinny new locker. But the poor guy was falling apart right in front of me. He did not know where all his stuff in the bag was, his towel kept falling off, he couldnt move around because he picked the bottom locker and the guys to the left and right were there, so little room. He looked frustrated as hell by the time he walked out. Before he left I told him to pick the upper locker all the way at the end, that way he doesnt deal with people all around him. Plus it is the one closest to the showers, no need to worry too much about the towel. Then I started thinking, I wish someone had said that to me. So many things I had to learn on my own, but if someone had said something to me, I would have been greatful. What would be the locker/gym advice you would be to the new guy in the gym?

To always be conscious of the people around him. Be courteous. Do you see a line of machines that people are using and then shifting one to the right? Then don't jump into the middle of the process holding them up in their routine. If you know someone is about to go to a machine, or suspect, then ask. Wait 5 minutes so you don't have to disrupt their chain.

Clean the sweat off the machine (weights or cardio) after you've finished. It's absolutely nasty to walk away from it without wiping it off.

Smile! You are there to improve yourself. Look around and you see frowning faces, people who obviously are not enjoying themselves. Find a way to enjoy your workout, and smile accordingly. It makes for a friendlier environment.

Never, ever take the locker right next to someone. I don't care how hot they are. It's rude to get into someone's space. There are other lockers, and your smiling face will be noticed appreciably while you hogging his elbow room will not be.

And finally, when the gym closes it closes. The employees want to go home. They don't want to wait on your ass because you couldn't move your ass.

Go easy on yourself at first. You have got plenty of time to be big. If you advance to fast with the weight you may loose your good form and end up injuring yourself which will destroy any previous advances you have made.

Also, I agree with scifi triguy above. Be courteous!! Replace the weights you have used in the same place that you found them so the person coming behind you will not have to look all over the gym to find a particular weight.

Don't push yourself too fast. Workout at a pace that works for you. If you can only get to the gym twice a week, fine. But if you feel the need to go four or five days a week, is that really manageable for you? I started burning out quickly at four days a week, so I scaled back. That was when I was 28. I'm now almost 42 and three days a week has been just right.

As for courtesy, I'd go further -- place the weights back where they BELONG rather than where you found them, if they're in the wrong place.

Definitely, I forgot about putting the weights back. That's excellent advice too.

I would also add, never forget your flipflops. You never know what you are stepping on. And do come with clean clothes to work out. I know we are all sweating and working out but some guys just wear the same freaking clothes all week long with out washing them, and stink up the place. Oh and mark your lock, I have seen so many guys going up and down the lockers because they have a black lock and there are like 10 of them and they dont remember which is theirs.

And definitely watch out for the crazy queens that seem to appreciate or encourage psychopathic behavior.

If he were gay like me (a rare enough condition that many might not match), I'd tell him to take whatever locker gives him the best view of the open gang showers, or whatever place gives him the most regular sight of undressed guys.

To me a straight locker room is one of the ultimate eye-candy places, along with gay bathhouses, gay resorts and nude beaches. There are a lot of practical considerations, like locker height, and crowding, but for me, the first priority is the view.

Haha, I hope that wasn't a sorry ass attempt at an indirect quote to my humor, especially w/ the usage of queen on a gay forum

I wasn't joking arcane. Stalkers aren't funny and it definitely isn't neat or exciting to be stalked. If someone thinks it's exciting to be stalked, then they have a screw loose and should be avoided themselves. Queen or otherwise.
