How often do you work a muscle?

I hit the weight room on Thursday and my pecs are still a little sore from that. Is it ok if I go in again today? I do full body workouts when I am at the gym and I have been going every other day lately but I'm not sure if that is enough time for my muscles to rest and rebuild themselves before breaking them down again.

You can work a lot of your core muscles every day.

    I have a muscle I work everyday, sometimes 2 or 3 times a day.

It depends on what you did in the gym. Anywhere from everyday to once a week to 14 days depending on weight lifted, number of times lifted, rest periods, and sets done.

Maybe it's time for you to do split routines rather than full-body workouts?

    Just thinkin'

Does it get stronger and more vascular?

Hmmm. None of these answers seem very helpful.
Larger muscle groups (legs, back) take longer to heal/repair. A week is the general consensus among bodybuilders and weightlifters.
Smaller muscle groups (e.g. arms and shoulders) can be worked again 3 or 4 days later. Some muscles that are constantly under tension from daily activities, such as abs and calves, can be stimulated a lot more.
    Good luck!

One day break should be enough. It really varies from person to person.

Well I'm working my chest, arms, back, legs, butt, shoulders, and abs every other day. My personal trainer seems to think it's an ok routine. He also said that I was in the top 10 percentile for amount of time spent at the gym icon_lol.gif

    I'm with this guy.
Try a 5 day split routine for a few weeks and see if that helps.

From what I hear from most bodybuilders (bodybuilders in the gym to fitness professional) is you shoud wait 3 days before you train a muscle. So if you do chest on a Monday you don't do it again until Thursday. Most bodybuilders/guys who workout I know live by this. But abs I hear you can so more times per week. Like 3-7 days a week. Opinions vary.

I have been thinking about cutting down the full body training to 2 days a week and swimming the remaining days. I found a triathlon racing and training team here in Sacramento and that is going to be my new year resolution. Going to be very very busy and active in 2013 and wouldn't have it any other way.
