Elitist....the Dumbing Down of America

    People love to criticize others by using the word eliist. Obama gets stuck with that label, so do the educated, the well travelled, and the dreamers who want to remake the nation/society into a better place.....and god forbid if he/she is very attractive and articulate. It seems nowdays, it is more acceptable to vote/not vote, or like/dislike a person/politician based on "feelings" hunches, and fears rather than an understanding of the issues and situations.

    Alexander Hamilton insisted in the 76th Federalist Paper that our leaders "would be both ashamed and afraid" to elevate people whose chief qualification appeared to be "insignificance and pliancy." But today Hamilton would probably be dismissed as an "elitist" who cannot relate to the average Joe's apparent yearning for leaders who know just as little about the issues as they do.

    The late senator from Nebraska is the guy who once defended an ill-qualified, ill-fated high court nominee by saying, "So what if he is mediocre? There are a lot of mediocre judges and people and lawyers. They are entitled to a little representation, aren't they?"

    Hruska was ridiculed for this remarks. But that was so 38 years ago. Given the populist impulses that are running rampant today, he looks like a seer.


    This push to mediocrity is simply popularism gone wild and we will all suffer........because nobody wants their "feelins" hurt.

    and MAN have they not paid us in full?

    Men and Women of quality have been denigrated
    and what do they give us instead?

    and where has this all gotten us?

    Interestingly, people who use words of more than two syllables are often called "fags." As in "lighten up with that fuckin faggy talk!."

    On the other hand, I live in a state that is ruled by left-wing extremists. They particularly hate anybody who can do even simple math. Knowledge of chemistry or physics is tantamount to witchcraft.

    I agree. It almost makes one wish for a landed aristocracy ala Thomas Jeffeson. It's never ceased to amaze me how little the American people appreciate intellectual talent. But then again, our history has reinforced the mythical ideal of the common man's populism and wisdom. H. L. Mencken's observation of never underestimating the stupidity of the American public is all too unfortunately true.

    Did you guys see Lady Lynn Foresster de Rothschild (yes, those Rothschilds) accusing Obama of being an elitist on CNN. It's like being in the twilight zone. Although, the term elitist does not need to imply wealth, or even race, because there is something else to it, but I can't put my finger on it. I go to a very Republican gym so I am immersed in this stuff.

    Possibly or maybe it is just that a PC world does not allow them to say what they really mean which is "stop acting white".

    What's wrong with this picture: Bush born into plenty of money, gets an elite education at his daddy's school, acts like an idiot and is considered a down-to-earth guy that everyone wants to have a beer with. Obama and his wife come from meager means both get elite educations, one does community service and the other gives up a high powered job to work for the inner city and they get labeled elitist.

    Those who call others elitists are probably not very smart themselves. Therefore, they hold those that are mediocre to a higher level than they should be.
    Then again, I don't label people like that.

    Well I have often advocated that old idea of choosing candidates for high office by a random drawing of social-security numbers, on the grounds that the result couldn't be any worse than the present system. I think we have a couple of good examples at hand. At least a random system wouldn't require that we always choose from a pool of individuals with a psycopathic craving for power.

    All agreed. But to be factual, Grandpa McSame went to the Naval Academy, not West Point. His father was an Admiral, so they practically had to take him. It certainly couldn't have been earned, considering his bottom-of-the-class ranking.

    Recently I experienced getting slammed by a Christian Right-winger Filipino who was contending that the US was a 'Christian State' and that the heat of the equatorial region was the cause of why equatorial nations are so underdeveloped.

    He told me to 'stop using big words because you sound gay' (actually gay wasn't the word he used, he said 'emo' which is tantamount to gay here anyway).

    Funny enough he, himself, speaks horrible horrible english. And his solution for his 'heat theory affecting filipino brains'?

    ...Move the Philippines away from the equator. I mean... WTF?! icon_eek.gif Is he even serious?!! ROFLMAO

    Indeed, compared to say... the UK or Japan. It seems as if being 'the next door regular ole guy who don't read books' is a plus in American politics. Note that even here in the Philippines, the sentiment is the same.
