I saw this on the news last night. It's certainly a step in the right direction. If any Church should be willing to adapt its the Church of England, given that it was created so Henry Viii could get a divorce. The modernisation of religion may not be upon us just yet but credit where it's due, it's nice to see the Church of England attempting to modernise.

In other words, the church gets to peer into the bedroom to see what's going on - not something they do with heterosexuals. Perhaps this would appear more just if they asked heterosexuals all about their sexual history, but at the moment, what they are really saying is, "You can be a priest/bishop if you deny yourself a normal, full life. If you get married, all will be well - but we won't let you get married."

    Sheer rubbish.

    I don't know, it's a slippery slope.

Today it's gay men with the provision they are celibate, but tomorrow it will be sexually active gay men, and then before you know it, BAM! The church will be allowing female bishops.

Do we really want to worship a god that would allow that?

The Anglican Church and other mainline Churches are falling apart at the seams because they change dogma like their underwear. This is why many Anglicans will join the Popes ordinariate.

A very half-ass attempt that doesn't really mean much.

I didn't realize that women can't be bishops in the Church of England, they can in the Anglican Church of Canada. My home diocese has a female bishop.

Yeah, it was a big deal a couple months ago the CoE re-affirmed its ban on women clergy. Which is why this is somewhat surprising, i'd like to know the rationale behind it.

And yet so many Catholics join the Episcopal Church - and so many who left the Anglican Communion for Rome have come back...

Celibate and partnered? Or 2 categories... 1) Celebate and 2) Partnered

What happens if one breaks up with their partner, are they out of there?

    Jez...

The CofE has no dogma as it has no magisterium. I was surprised, and pleased, by this move - although it is pretty mild and well overdue. The numbers joining the ordinariate will not be large; and - as with those who left over women priests - a lot of them will probably become Anglicans again.

I'm not a believer - but I view the CofE broadly benignly. This step forward does it no harm. And it has produced none of the anti-gay rants that Benedict seems to have come out with over the last few weeks.

As long as you and your life partner nevr ever have any kind of sexual relationship ever you can preach toother people about how sinful they are.

How will they keep track of who has been fucking or not?
