We both had the flu shot in September. I'm gonna be calling our doctor on Monday to see if we were immunized for the correct strain, or if we need another shot. At our ages the flu can be deadly. icon_sad.gif

The best advice is not to get it, and probably the best way to avoid it is to not touch doorknobs barehanded (and if you do, wash your hands afterwards), and to repeatedly sanitize your hands while working out and in lieu of that (and regardless), never touch your face at the gym.

There was a five year point in my life not long ago where I never went to the gym or used public transportation and I never got sick, not even a cold.

Sidebar: If you have the flu please don't go to the gym. You'll spread it. That's always how I catch it. How do I know? There's always somebody hacking away with a cough or sneeze on the cardio equipment.

Try Airborne ... it won't cure it, but might help

    The almighty influenza!

I always get the flu shot... but each year the most popular strains are not the most popular.

    Such is life.

A month ago the isolates from the hospital I work at were covered by this year's flu shot. That being said, myself and many of my coworkers who received the vaccine have come down with the flu. I will say that I didn't get it as bad as most.

I don't know about the rest of the country, but DC is having an awful bout of some deadly combination of cold/flu/bronchitis/sinus infection/pneumonia. More than half the people in my office have been out for days, or more, in the past month.
The only remedy I've heard good things about is the Z-Pack. (Prescription required.)

I got my flu shot in November, and came down with the flu last Thursday. Spent 2 days mostly sleeping, then 3 days of not being too active. I finally started to feel more energetic yesterday. UGH!

I highly recommend against tamiflu. In order to be effective it needs to be started within 24-48 hrs of the onset of the flu. At best it will only decrease the duration of symptoms by 1 day.

Also, only take the Z-pak (or any other antibiotic) if you have a known or highly suspected bacterial infection. The flu is caused by a virus and antibiotics are of no benefit.

If you are otherwise healthy, my advice is to get a lot of rest and drink plenty of fluids. If you suffer from other comorbid conditions, then seek the advice of your regular physician.

I think there is something to this going out in the cold that prompts us to getting a cold easier. It snowed in Dallas on Christmas and that was the night I got cabin fever and went to the party where I caught my cold.

some doctors say its not the cold air at all, so it must be being around other people that are germmy, i was at a dance party so im sure others passed it around and got sick as well, there could have been people from the east coast at our west coast party, it was NY weekend

I heard that the reason there appears to be more colds in winter isn't because it is cold, but because people spend more time together in enclosed spaces over winter giving the virus more opportunity to spread.

I don't think I have ever had the flu, I know it's not a silver bullet, but I always have a flu shot for the season.

TheGuyNextDoor saidGet to the Dr. and ask him to prescribe you Tamiflu NOW!
It's your best chance at feeling better soon!
I had my Flu shot last Thursday (2 days ago) since the Flu is rampant here in Texas.
I caught a cold on Christmas night by going to a party,, like the dumbass I am!
My pal Roguewave here turned me onto ZICAM Ultra and it knocked that cold in the Ass and I'm 100% fine now.

That said, I'm taking Equate Zinc Cold Therapy once in the morning and at night to keep my immune strong since I don't want a second cold. Sometimes # 2 is worst than the first!

TAMIFLU my friend.. you can thank me later.

Too late for OP for Tamiflu. Tamiflu must begin within 48 hours of symptoms of influenza, or as prophylaxis when exposed to an influenza vector.

Same here, going on day 6 now, but feeling on the upswing finally. One more day of rest and should be back to normal. Tons of soup and water and Gatorade this week.

Tonight I ordered Thai and got Tom Yum soup with straw mushrooms and chicken, seasoned with lemon grass, lime, and hot pepper. Felt amazing, tasted great, and cleared me up.

Highly recommend the flu shot if you haven't already. This season is bad. Missed Wednesday - Friday for work this week. Theraflu at night...love that stuff.

There is a strain of flu in Ontario right now that settles into your lungs and it can take along time before you get rid of it icon_sad.gif
