Have you walked out of a restaurant?

A friend and I went to a fairly expensive fish restaurant tonight. My friend is straight and rather funny looking at times. Kind of like a barney rubble character but on the slobbish side. I had ordered a beer but didn't drink it yet. I looked over at the hostesses and they were laughing at something about my friend. Maybe they were making goofy comments or something. They saw my staring at them and scattered in opposite directions. I told my friend and said they were laughing at us so he asked me if I wanted to leave. The entrees were all $30 and up mainly so way overpriced and we didn't see anything we wanted anyway. I felt guilty. First time I did that but it was also pretty funny. Yes I know the waitress must have felt bad. What are your stories?

Yup. We got seated. Waited for about 10 minutes. Got our complimentary water from the busser. Waited around 15 minutes. Server finally came by to give us menus. Waited another 15 minutes. Got up and left.

Back in the days when I was one third of a ménage à trois (2 guys, 1 girl) the girl and I would sometimes go out for dinner together when the other guy went out "hunting," as he called it. Catting around in other words. One time we went to this very nice Italian restaurant with a very good reputation. However, although the food was good, the service was amazingly slow and bad. It took forever for our entrées to arrive. But the weird part was, once we were finished, they never brought us our check. We sat there for a very long time, made motions to the waiters that were quite obvious -- and we were utterly ignored. Neither one of us could make any sense of it at all and were getting pissed off. So, finally, we just got up, put on our jackets and walked out the door. We made no attempt to hide what we were doing and no one made any effort to stop us. It has stuck with me precisely because it was one of those WTF moments in life where things just didn't make 'sense' in the usual way.

Never have because I'm a wuss, but I would if the situation asked for it. Maybe snap a couple times in their face and diva stomp out.

I've never done it, but would have requested to speak with the manager. If you felt strongly enough that they were talking about your friend, than talking with a manager would have been just as good.

Actually, speaking with a manager would have been far better. They would have learned a lesson. Walking out, the manager does not know about the bad service his team is delivering.

Yes. After placing our order and waiting almost 30 minutes, the waitress came back and asked if we were ready to place our order.

    We promptly left.

I haven't walked out.....yet! Then again, I've noticed that extremely bad service usually occurs at chain restaurants and I don't go to many of them unless I really have to. The worse service I've experienced was PF Chang's. But that's what I get for thinking they have excellent Asian dishes.

This happens all the time in France. Combination of rude waiters and rude customers I guess. It is very common here.
I even left without paying 1 or 2 times. For the same reasons as MikeW.

Nah. I usually tell them about our experience so that they feel guilty and give us free stuff. II'll grab the waiter and say, "we know things happen and that you're doing all you can but we've been waiting for our food for over an hour". Sometimes, if they are really late with lunch, as soon as the food gets out to the table we'll ask them to take it back and box it up because we've run out of time and have to get back for a meeting. I've been to a handful of very nice restaurants where they picked up our entire tab ($125+ for 4 people) and gave us free desserts because of poor service. It really makes the difference in your experience keeps you coming back if they make up for it.

I was at an olive garden once, and we waited 2 HOURS for our food....AND the fire alarm went off 3 times and we had to go outside. They paid for our dinner and gave us a gift card though haha!

Ive done it several times. Usually because of poor service. I have also never left a tip. I remember once a waitress literally running after me saying "Sir, you forgot to leave a tip". I yelled back to her" I didnt forget. You suck at your job"

No, I'm a corporate chef which is far less grueling than wrking at a restaurant. Collateral damage can be at the front or back of the house, even both when it's real bad.

Once in a restaurant with friends we waited thirty minutes for our meal to fail to arrive. We left!

On several occasions but the most memorable one is the one I'll talk about.

Three of my female friends and I decided to check out a restaurant that was in operations for two months. As soon as we entered , we found that there was no one around! Not even a waiter. That was our first clue.Only when we sat down and within five minutes somebody came to give us the menus. Another party came in, but they promptly left after seeing the place somewhat deserted!
Service was unbelievably slow, we waited over an hour for the food. When it did arrive, the dishes smelled gnarly. Hell I took a bite of it and nearly spat it straight back out. Not just mine but the other girls dishes were atrocious. Needless to say we decided to head to another place and have something edible. Before we left, we called for the manager. After listening to our complaints, he began to argue with us and said the food was meant to taste like that. I don't what he eats but the four of us have had quite an extensive food knowledge to believe his horse shit. To add to it, one of the gals is a food critic!

We just paid for the drinks and left. We kinda lost our appetites by then , so we decided to have coffee and sandwiches at a cafe over.

That restaurant later within two weeks was shut down.

Sure. We usually try to assess the restaurant "vibe" before we've ordered and leave then, if necessary. If things are already bad (being seated at a really bad table, being ignored, etc.) things rarely get better.

    Yep. Same reason.

Another thing that bugs me & that I'll speak to the staff about: frigid temps in the dining area!

Even in summer some places keep it set on "Icicle" in the place.
When I've said something (usually with my elderly parents trying to eat & shivering or when seeing other 80+ y.o. patrons with coats on!) they invariably say "but it's so HOT in the kitchen!"

"Yes, cupcake, but the kitchen ain't paying your salary. We out here eating are!"

Never yet happen...but I hate assumptious waitress thinking you are a regular and lightly taking things like it was all in Auto as what you order like always then lightly service you.

That could actually be a turn off! Yes I have the tendency to walk off on that.

Yep, left a few times in my life, a fairly rare occurrence. For the same reason other guys have stated here: unacceptably slow service just to place our order. And maybe a couple of times when we were seated near an exceptionally loud & obnoxious group, with no other seating options. I don't think I've ever left abruptly once the food was on the table.

Yep...If the service is horrible I have no problem walking out. I used to be a server and I understand how hard it is...but there are some instances where the servers are just not doing their job...
