    When I visited the Navy Research Lab I saw an adjustable wrench with working parts that been made with a 3-D printer. Very,very cool. I also witnessed a firing of a rail gun, which put a small aluminum round through five 1-inch steel plates. But that's another story.

    Very cool stuff. A friend of mine has a 3d printer, but he almost exclusively uses it to make molds to cast plastics with. The actual printed objects themselves are sadly too brittle to really use for mechanical parts. It least on his printer, there may be better technologies on the market.

    I'm getting a 3D printer later this summer. Been looking at prices vs functionality and they're not all that expensive.

    It'll pay itself off in less than a year just by printing quadcopter and bicycle parts.

    Will you have to design the parts yourself? Or, are there enough 3D printer users with the same bikes and quadcopters such that you can simply download the designs and print them?

    Good question. That's a bridge I"ll have to cross once I get there.

    But I am capable of learning how to how to design my own parts. It'll take some trial and [lots of] error, but it'll be a fun project to take on.

    There are sure to be plenty of helpful videos on youtube. For example, this guy is good for general Blender stuff, and he has a second youtube channel for 3d printing (but not much there so far).

    I think what will really ramp up the usefulness of 3D printers are matching 3D scanners. I have a flat bed scanner and networked color laser printer connected to a laptop that serve as a color copier; press the copy button on the scanner, and the printer shoots out a copy. I can imagine the same thing in 3D, with a 3D scanner with an automated scanning arm, that with multiple scans of the object, flipping the object over between scans, could send a perfect digital model of the object to the 3D printer.

    What you can do, if you want to improve on the current technology, is start designing a 3D scanner that uses various technologies to scan inside material as well. That way you could (in theory) scan your smartphone and print another one.

    No doubt that technology will be here eventually, but until then just being on the design team that makes the first working prototype would be an honor. icon_wink.gif
