Symbiotes exist in a mutually beneficial equilibrium - helpful.

The parasites in this study excrete a chemical which masks the symptoms of the parasite's presence. Because these symptoms are typically dangerous and undesirable, the parasite is "helping" the host in order to avoid detection and elimination by the immune system.

These worms will not make you leaner (they like when you eat). They will only help limit some adverse effects caused by poor dietary choices.

Exactly, you're correct and in this unusual case, a parasite is providing an ancillary benefit, albeit for the "wrong reasons". Unlike a true symbiotic relationship, these worms will do the patient in in the long-term. No fun.

i disagree ..i spent a month in india got a parasitic worm from drinking unpasterize cow milk..nearly died, had to go to bangkok thailand to get treatment..
got home and spent a year wearing depend diapers, only because i could never have a solid stool/poop.

    no fun..trust me..
when you fart you have to be in the bathroom,as you have no idea if it will be a dry or a wet messy fart..9times out of 10 it was a messy fart..that went on for a year..
i lost money from work, could not go out to dinner, movies, could no tgo anywhere in fear of not getting to a toliet in time..

the best way is to loose weight is by diet and excersie.
the medication i took to rid my body of this worm, looked like huge brown pills you would give a horse..

please i beg you guys..never let anyone insert into you rbody a parasitic worm of any kind..a tape worm is nothing compare to a parasitic worm..

    god honest truth..
i still carry with me everywhere i go a diaper..and a change of clothing..i will swear on a stack of bibles i am telling you the truth..
    jimmy.
    p.s.
to get home ,i flew from bangkok to paris then to miami..i didnt drink or eat anything for 2 days before flying until i got home to america..i went 4 days with nothing in my system in fear of a mid air blowout..you know how hard it was to turn down first class food..

Gross. Unbelievably gross. That this is an option someone would seriously consider should be a wake up call.

"I really like eating twinkie pies and a bowl of candy every day but I don't want diabetes... I know! I'll just have some parasitic worms live in my belly to regulate my insulin! That makes way more sense than changing the behaviors that are putting me in an early grave!"

    Seriously, humanity, what the hell?

Your reaction is typically due to eating sterile foods all your life. which also is the same reason as silly allergies like peanut, soy and other common things. The body doesn't go into that kinda shock when we dont live in a bubble with nature. I have gotten parasites but nothing of that reaction it was simply an over the counter pill and it was done with but that was in the case of bad parasites, and like bacterial cultures in your stomach you have good parasites too. This phobia of nature is ridiculous.

There has been a lot of talk that parasitic worms (tapeworms) are the answer for autoimmune diseases of the digestive track like Crohns Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. The theory being if you give your immune system something to attack, it stops attacking itself. Fairly simple to keep the tapeworms to a managable level, and people are supposedly cured. Since it is not approved as an FDA approved protocol, there's a whole underground process to "do it yourself" by traveling abroad to Africa and walking barefoot...

    No lie...

@FootballHawk your comments are way out of line. There is more than one kind of parasite on the planet, and just because you happened upon a relatively benign variant doesn't mean Jimmy is a wimp. Your simplistic and reductionist understanding of the balance between biology and environment is akin to the depth of reporting found on Entertainment Tonight - fun, fluffy, and totally vapid.

by definition a parasite isn't good.

This is voodoo science. Of course, if you're infected by a parasite that is eating your from the inside out (it's called being sick), you are going to lose weight.

In theory, you can probably kill the parasite, but, if you can't get it killed, it kills you. This is about as lazy as the stomach pump posted a few days ago.

There is all sorts of stuff that lives inside us, but, a destructive parasite is not a magic cure for weight loss.

Remember: The U.S. is rated 26'th in The World academically, and it's for a reason.

Clearly, there are situations where the introduction of other living organisms can be beneficial. E.g., antibiotic resistant staph infections (thru the over use of antibiotics) and leaches.

Fat folks have lots of excuses for being fat, but, the biggest is they have a lifestyle that makes them so.

Have any of you heard of malaria?

Your ignorance is outstanding. While we do over use too much antibacterial stuff, have you ever heard of cholera? The plague? These diseases swamp the immune systems of humans. The cure for both was sanitation. Smallpox, in large part, was controlled by isolation, and, ultimately, a vaccine.

Polio only exists in about 3 (India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan) countries now, and could have been wiped out years ago, had not the the ignorant, religious, folks their refused the vaccine. Just 315 cases of polio were had last year, but, folks like yourself, keep it from becoming a dead disease. As long as SINGLE case exists, it could explode. Their ignorance makes for more children who are crippled for life. It's wrong. It's a danger for The World at large. Unfortunately, religion preys upon the ignorant...quite well.

Ignorance is what it is: ignorance.

We cook our food to kill the parasites, the bacteria, and to break down the proteins, dissolve the starches. By definition, our cooked food SHOULD be sterile!

Parasites in American livestock are MOSTLY non-existent these days because the livestock is heavily medicated before being processed. It's still a horrible idea to eat raw chicken, pork, or beef. There's stuff all over in food processing. Those organisms need to be killed.

I hope this helps you to think more clearly, about, something you clearly weren't thinking clearly about before making your ignorant remarks.

that's not what the article is about. did anyone actually read the article? the research says nothing about injecting people with these worms... the article is about the discovery that these worms release a sugar when in people that reduces the harmful effects of obesity. the article is about producing that sugar-- sans the worm-- for people, not about giving them injections of these worms.

I wasn't responding to the article. I've seen the tv about it. I was responding to the ignorance of the poster referencing sterile food and people being sick. Please re-read the post.

As far as gylcan goes, it will be synthesized as a substitute for exercise and proper nutrition and like statins used to treat the effects, of a lazy, over-eating culture, rather, than working at the cause: poor lifestyle. The drug that will result will, like statins, line the pockets of Big Pharm, but, won't help public health to any large degree.

Exactly - and it has nothing to do with weight loss, rather mitigating symptoms of carrying too much fat.

I expect obese people will use such an advance to "control" their problems rather than fix them. It's similar to high cholesterol and statins. Nutrition and lifestyle should be used to treat before resorting to long-term or chronic medication, IMHO.

    Why no worm injections?
    1) It will come as a deep disappointment to the thrill-seeking readers of this thread; and
    2) worms too have their rightful place in the ecosystem.
