The premise of your post is flawed.

It's not clear which gun this woman actually used, but there's no reason why moderate restrictions on magazine capacity/firing rate, enhanced scrutiny of gun owners, mandatory training etc. should have prevented her from doing this. These measures have been shown in Australia and New Zealand to effectively prevent gun massacres.

I know what gun she did not have: an AK-47.

Anyway, this is an example of misleading vividness. Could she not have stopped the intruder with a taser? Calling 911 while hiding?

"In a 10-minute 911 recording released by the Walton County Sheriff's Office, Donnie Herman calmly explained what was happening to a dispatcher. His part of the conversation with his wife was also recorded.

"Authorities believe Slater targeted a home in another local subdivision but left when confronted by the homeowner, Chapman said."

Ooops. Looks like no gun required.

    And this is plain conflicting:

"Herman took her 9-year-old son and daughter into an upstairs bedroom and locked the door. They went into bathroom and she locked that door, too. She got her handgun from a safe, the report said, and hid with her children. At some point, she called her husband, who kept her on the line and called 911 on another line."

So there was a safe with a gun in it in the bathroom?!?

THEN it goes on to say, " Melinda Herman told police she started shooting the man when he opened the door to the crawl space. The man pleaded with her to stop, but she kept firing until she had emptied her rounds, she told police. She then fled to a neighbor's house with her children."

Crawl space? But they were in a locked bathroom.....

First, child, "less than lethal" weapons are still dangerous. They can and do result in fatal injuries. They require skill to use. They are not toys. If people should not have firearms, then they should not have most less than lethal weapons either.

The people in the story did hide. Most people do. Even with firearms, most people do not play John Wayne cowboy bang bang. Because you do not know what you are up against. You take a defensive position and hope not to be engaged.

Wow, a 29 year old (?) calling me child. That's novel...last time I was called that was by an 89 year patient some years ago. icon_smile.gif
And I agree with you, tasers and even mace need training to use. And they can be lethal when used incorrectly, but much less lethality than guns, no?

And yes, it sounds like they did hide at first (with inconsistent details), but didn't persist in hiding and waiting on authorities.

I believe we need clip / gun control to limit the size of ammunition clips.

It is very likely this would have passed after the political storm quieted a bit.

The vice president this week in a very inartful way, ruined the political landscape by suggestin that gun control could be approached via executive order.

To me this has to be the worst thing the Administration could have done. Not only does it fan the flames of paranoia about the federal governement. It does not give members of Congress who would have voted for a bill any political cover in tough districts.

Executive orders where congress acts in that area have little of any legal weight.

What will likely happen is any controversal order would be enjoined by the Judiciary. Leaving a costly legal battle and "NO GUN CONTROL".

I think history will look back at this adminstration tactics as significantly worsening the political divide in this country.

musclemed, we all know you deeply and passionately want the gov't to fail, and so like others here that want the same, I have to consider your bias first before all else.

Nobody is saying tasers aren't dangerous. If they weren't dangerous they would not be effective. There are not "countless" deaths from tasers...that can be quantified. This blog says 534 deaths from tasers happened in the US from 2001 to 2013.
    http://electronicvillage.blogspot.com/2009/05/taser-related-deaths-in-united-states.html

In 2012 alone there were 125 deaths from legal intervention with guns.
    http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/ss6106a1.htm?s_cid=ss6106a1_w

So clearly guns, even when used legally, are more lethal.

And we're not talking about all tasers here. Police use tasers that are more powerful than those sold to civilians.

But we digress. I still think the whole thread is an exercise in the fallacy of misleading vividness.

Oops, but then the gun lobby has never been known to let the truth get in the way of a good gun-totin' story.

No one is saying that they wanna take away legally acquired hand guns
What we need is a safe and sane approach to gun laws in this country ... Which BY NO MEANS we have right now

No one ... needs a multi-capacity rifle with armor piercing bullets
and there needs to be a repeal on the law that stops governmental or private studies on handgun violence

That's it ... end of story

No where near the end of the story. There are gun control laws all over the place. And, they do want to eventually ban the ownership and use of guns. What if we changed "guns" to "abortion"? Changing a word or two makes it clear to anyone who makes the effort to think clearly about it.

Umm ... like banning the use of Assault Abortions or stopping the use of Multi-capacity Abortions?

Stop watching FOX it's seriously affecting your thinking capacity

How many babies are murdered each year via abortion, vs. how many people are murdered by "evil" inanimate objects? Sorry, it's your logic that lacks, well, logic. But don't despair, it is full of arrogance. Typical of the left.

    That's your personal opinion.

My personal opinion is that teenage sluts don't "need" to get abortions every time the condom slips off at the big homecoming party at the star quarterback's house.

But, there's a little thing called "the right to choose." Just like there's a thing called "the right to keep and bear arms."

It's not about "need." Thank GOD we don't base laws off "need."

It's utterly ridiculous to try to draw any sort of equivalence between abortion and gun massacres for many reasons.

Yes, there's only a few gun massacres, but millions of abortions, which murder the most innocent and vulnerable of human life. Really ridiculous.

More die from abortions than gun violence.

    Yes, because:

    i) Foetuses are not humans and do not have the same rights as living people. They are not to be treated at the same level as inanimate matter, but it's not possible to "murder" them. Gun massacres murder real living people.

ii) Abortion invariably concerns one or at most two foetuses. It's not reasonable to call that a "massacre". Gun massacres involve the murder of many people, which means that it is legitimate to call them a massacre.

iii) Abortion is already extremely heavily regulated. Gun ownership is lightly regulated, and even then the regulations are ineffective.

    ...

In any case, do we actually have a libertarian who is arguing against abortion—just how fucking stupid are you? Do you even understand what Libertarianism actually is?????
