WLM is ending! You will need to switch your account to Skype as of March 15.

I have so many years worth of chat logs on there. I started out with ICQ in like 2000 and then MSN in 2001 before they even had chat logs.
I actually use Miranda IM with my WLM contacts because their client pissed me off.

So are you going to move to Skype or take the time to switch to Google Chat or something else? It might be a stupid move by MS.

Our company uses Skype. Hate it. It's bloated, unreliable, and awful. I actually prefer AIM and YIM for basic instant messaging. Google Chat is ok. The client software is awful. But Hangouts is the killer feature.

Never tried AIM or YIM. I hated Skype when I tried it in the past. It did seem bloated and there were a lot of audio problems. And settings which seemed limited. That could change with this big changeover, but I kind of want out of Microsoft's grip.

Everyone I know uses Google talk, and my MSN history is the only thing keeping me from that. But since it's ending, I may as well switch..

I don't really even use it that often anymore.

    Whoa! WLM's going...?

Damn, my entire teen angst life is logged somewhere out there, and it'll be gone soon.

This will be a major thing here in Brazil where we use MSN and nothing else. I'll stick to Miranda IM and only go to Skype if I need to use my webcam.

when I heard the news i went like ugh! icon_rolleyes.gif

not hating Skype just not liking its vibe built UI and stuff too bubbly-kindergarten for me . Unlike my first ICQ my favorite loading flower 105.gif, that was such a cute probably my favorite IM of all time, it brings back the days when i was a Kid!... then came Im Mister trying to be Cool MSN....icon_rolleyes.gif but not too bad! WLM was good its just stupid for them going fully on Skype.

I'm a all YahooM! guy, just love the integration of my mails with, and there is nothing like YM! been using it since college....icon_wink.gif

I haven't used an IM in a while, but I used to use YIM and it was very similar in features and accessibility to WLM. However, since it's been a while for me I can't say for certain if it still is.

Haha, I got that alert yesterday.

Boy, much of my adolescence took place on MSN especially with a number of different penpals I had in Argentina and Spain back then. Needless to say, I began to hate MSN/WLM when it changed to the current one.

Skype generally works fine for me. I really love the emoticons (the teddy bear hug!). However, offline messages frequently get delayed. I can't begin to tell you how many messages I've received when I sign in that were originally sent to me days or weeks before!

Who uses AIM or YIM anymore? I haven't used either of those in 4+ years.

    WTF is WLM?

I used YIM for a while, but it melted down into such a spamfest that I had to delete it. Apple's IM products always seem nice, but they never seem to catch on.

What I'm looking for now is something like skype or facetime, that also allows you to send images during a conversation. I.e., I want to conference with clients and throw up keynote/powerpoint slides at the same time. I know that there are expensive corporate apps like that, but there ought to be a solution for the masses by now.

WLM - Windows Live Messenger. That's what MSN Messenger became some years ago.

I don't know if Teamviewer would help. It's a program you install on both computers and it will broadcast your desktop to the other people. So you could open images on your screen and it would be seen by them. You could also open Paint or a spreadsheet and either party could draw or change data.

It's free-- not sure if that includes business use.

I can't believe how huge my log files for MSN are. Basically my whole life is documented there, since around 2003-4 when they added logging functionality. Any time I've needed to remember a link someone sent me, or which day something happened, I could search the log and find it.

I've requested that google talk add an import chat log function, along with lots of other people, but I don't think it's there yet. They should really get on it over the next 2 months!

So, this means learning to speak on Skype? Not just for the hookups anymore. Wow.
